South Africa’s five T20s against Zimbabwe in Harare in June may not be televised as Zimbabwe Cricket is unlikely to be able to afford the costs involved. The matches will be played between June 20 and 24, in accordance with South Africa’s request earlier this year. The tour is an addition to the Zimbabwe board’s planned budget, which will impact on its ability to provide television coverage.”It will cost us a lot of money to get a broadcast deal and because this was not part of our initial plans, we have not budgeted for it,” Ozias Bvute, managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. “But South Africa are our neighbours and they requested this from us, so we will host the matches. As long as it is cost neutral, we can make it happen.” So far, the only costs Zimbabwe Cricket will incur are the South Africa team’s hotel expenses.Zimbabwe’s board is on a tight budget and made a loss on all three incoming tours hosted during the 2011-12 season. It remains committed to seeking out more competition as part of the plan to re-establish the team at Test level and will likely also host an A tour later in the winter. The five T20s will not be recognised as internationals but have instead been given practice match status because the visit is not part of the Future Tours Programme. They were organised on special request after Gary Kirsten, South Africa’s coach, asked to play more 20-over fixtures before the World Twenty20 in September. All five fixtures will be played in the afternoon to “accommodate the shorter daylight hours”, according to Zimbabwe Cricket.South Africa will arrive in Harare on June 18 and play one practice game before the back-to-back engagements start on June 20. South Africa have not been to Zimbabwe since August 2007, for an ODI series, and are not scheduled to play Tests against their neighbours until 2014, although they have sent various A teams to play first-class matches and in tri-series, as well as hosted Zimbabwe in 2010.The South Africa visit will mark the end of a five-month break for Zimbabwe, who last played in early February on their tour of New Zealand. Zimbabwe do not have any international engagements over the winter but are due to host Bangladesh in the 2012-13 season.South Africa and Zimbabwe are in the same group for the World T20, which also includes Sri Lanka. South Africa have not won an ICC trophy since 1998 and Kirsten has been tasked with changing that.

England must learn to play in Asia – Strauss

Andrew Strauss has warned that England must learn the lessons of their 3-0 series whitewash at the hands of Pakistan or face more misery in Asian conditions.England’s 71-run loss in the third Test in Dubai condemned them to a 3-0 defeat in their first series since officially becoming ranked the No. 1 Test team. It was also the first series whitewash England had suffered since the 5-0 Ashes loss of 2006-07 and only the seventh in their history. With a two-Test tour to Sri Lanka coming up next month and a tour of India before Christmas, Strauss knows England have to improve in these conditions if they are to retain any hope of remaining the top-ranked side.Strauss, England’s Test captain, admitted that his team would do some “soul searching” over the coming days but insisted they would conduct a full debrief before making any decisions over the future of certain players. The positions of Ian Bell (who averaged 8.5 in the series), Kevin Pietersen (11.16) and Eoin Morgan (13.66) are all likely to come under scrutiny after England succumbed to their first series defeat since they lost to the West Indies in early 2009 and the first since Andy Flower was appointed to the position of permanent coach.”We can’t ignore this result and just say it’s an aberration,” Strauss said. “That would not help us. This was an eye-opener and a wake-up call and with two more tours on the subcontinent coming up, things won’t get easier. We have to be up for this challenge.”We have to look at the reasons we lost. We have to look at our preparation, our training, our techniques and our temperament. It would be wrong for us to ignore these things, but we also need to remain true to what has worked well in the past.”No-one has a right to play for England forever. It would be patently wrong for us to think like that. But we also need to take time to let the dust settle. We need to look at what went wrong individually. Hopefully over the next week or two, things will become clearer.”I have great faith in our batsmen,” Strauss continued. “I think they are some of best be in world, but I am disappointed we haven’t coped better. I haven’t been involved in a series where so many batsmen have had a hard time. We all have some questions to answer and soul searching into how we can do things better. There was a consistent failure on our part. If you keep getting bowled out for 140 or 150 you’re not going to win many Test matches. We could and should have been better.”Andy Flower, the England coach, suggested the long lay-off his players had enjoyed before the series might have been a contributory factor to the result. Before this tour England had not played Test cricket since the series against India finished in August last year and no cricket at all since the limited-overs series in October.”Looking back now, I don’t think we were ready,” Flower said. “I shoulder that side of the blame because it was my decision to give them that time off. We won’t let that happen again.”We spent a couple of months out of the game and not doing a lot while Pakistan were beating Sri Lanka and working hard to beat Bangladesh and that hardened them up for this contest. Certainly during that rest time, our team and support staff were all being lauded and, while that was happening, Pakistan were working hard at their game and beating international opposition. Consequently one side was sharp and ready and one side wasn’t and we’ve got to do something about that.”Flower also expressed his faith in the batting line-up, but confessed he was surprised at how they had struggled in the series. “We do have a lot of faith in our players and that faith has been justified over a long period of time,” he said. “But we’ve obviously underperformed here badly. I’ve been surprised by how poorly we’ve batted.”We have to take the lessons that have been learned here and improve our skills and improve out method for the Sri Lanka tour. A number of our big players have underperformed in this series. It was the first time that so many of our established Test crickets were out of runs and not feeling as confident as they usually do and not as clear in their method as they usually are.”Ian Bell is one of a few England batsmen under pressure after a poor series•Getty Images

Misbah-ul-Haq, meanwhile, said the whitewashing of England has sent “a strong message that the Pakistan team are back in cricket.”Pakistan’s captain hailed his side’s “wonderful achievement” after leading them to victory in the third Test. It was the fifth time that Pakistan had achieved a whitewash in a series of three matches or more.Victory was especially sweet for Misbah given the context in which the series was played. The previous time these teams met, in 2010, the series was soured by allegations of corruption that subsequently led to three of the Pakistan team receiving jail sentences. The episode tarnished the reputation of Pakistan cricket and forced the side to rebuild with a new captain and several new players. Now, however, Misbah feels Pakistan cricket is in the news for the right reasons.”We showed that we are a power in the cricketing world again,” Misbah said. “Now is the time to give importance to the Pakistan team again. It is a wonderful thing for us. I can’t describe in words how important this series was for our team.”We just came out of such problems. But the way we have come out and the way we are progressing is wonderful. Everyone was ignoring us, but now they have to look at Pakistan cricket.”Pakistan, who were dismissed for just 99 on the first day of this game, also became the first team since 1907 to win a Test after being bowled out for under 100 in the first innings. Pakistan responded by limited England’s first innings lead to 42, before centuries from Azhar Ali and Younis Khan seized the initiative for the hosts.”Our bowlers did a wonderful job,” Misbah said. “They cut down the lead and we knew that, if we were only behind by 100 on the first innings, we were still in the game. Then Azhar Ali and Younis Khan batted wonderfully. Their batting was the main thing that brought us back into the game.”Having proved their potency in these conditions, Misbah agreed that his team would be defined by their success overseas. “That’s another challenge,” Misbah said, “but this team loves challenges. We have it in our mind. We are focused on proving ourselves outside Pakistan.”If you saw us in New Zealand, though, you would know we can do it. Conditions there were not easy for our team, but we performed well there and in the West Indies. We are looking forward to playing in South Africa and Australia and we will start our preparation now.”

Late wickets give Blues the edge

Alex Doolan gave Tasmania a solid platform on the first day against New South Wales in Canberra, but a pair of late wickets to Josh Hazlewood gave the Blues a slight edge at stumps. At the close, the Tigers were 6 for 267 having chosen to bat, with Matt Johnston on 15 and Tom Triffitt on 7.Late in the afternoon, Hazlewood trapped James Faulkner lbw for 44 and soon afterwards had Doolan lbw for 82, which was the key breakthrough. Doolan and Faulkner had put together a 97-run partnership after several members of the Tasmanian top order made starts but failed to go on.Ed Cowan had struck 11 boundaries in his 65 before he was lbw to Josh Lalor, the New South Wales left-arm fast bowler playing his second first-class game. Lalor finished the day with 3 for 62 from 23 overs, a fine collection that also included George Bailey for 18 and Mark Cosgrove for 10.

Kochi stifle Kolkata in hard-fought win

Kochi Tuskers Kerala won a battle of attrition against Kolkata Knight Riders on a slow Eden Gardens pitch that aided the spinners, in the process moving third position in the points table

Kochi Tuskers Kerala won a battle of attrition against Kolkata Knight Riders on a slow Eden Gardens pitch to move to the third position in the points table. The wicket did not play as low as it did in Kolkata’s win against Rajasthan Royals, but it was just as slow, making it difficult for batsmen, and a delight for the spinners. After Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan had taken six wickets for 48 runs between them to restrict Kochi to 132, Kolkata’s powerful batting line-up would have fancied the modest chase. But Kochi’s own army of spinners – Muttiah Muralitharan, Ramesh Powar and Ravindra Jadeja – stifled the runs though they did not get as many wickets, and ensured the pressure got to the Kolkata batsmen, who fell six runs short. As it transpired, the performance against the new-ball bowlers was the difference between the two sides. Kolkata’s seamers conceded 26 for 0 in their first three overs, while Kochi’s fast bowlers dismissed Jacques Kallis and Gautam Gambhir, while conceding only 20 runs in their first four overs. Kallis fell to the hook for the second time running, swinging Vinay Kumar straight to deep square leg. Gambhir played inside the line of a full delivery from RP Singh that straightened and uprooted middle stump as Kolkata began to stutter. In the next over, Manvinder Bisla drove outside the line of a Jadeja delivery to lose his off stump. Manoj Tiwary and Eoin Morgan tried to work the ball around but the spinners were getting turn, and their different styles posed problems. Muralitharan, back after being left out for the previous two games, varied his flight and angle brilliantly, Jadeja fired the ball in, and Powar stuck to flight as he always does. The mounting asking-rate led to Morgan charging out of his crease in the 13th over for a non-existent single, and Jayawardene threw down the middle stump with a direct hit. Tiwary took on RP Singh in the next over with consecutive boundaries, but Shakib missed a low full toss off the last ball to be bowled. With 47 required from five overs, Jayawardene brought Powar back against Yusuf, who came in lower down the order, having injured himself taking a catch earlier. It was a make-or-break move, and Yusuf duly deposited the second delivery he faced beyond the wide long-on boundary. It was either foolhardy or brave of Powar to flight the next ball from round the wicket. It turned out to be the latter, as Yusuf went hard at it and got a top edge to short third man.It was all up to Tiwary now. He had batted intelligently, picking up the singles and finding the boundaries when the rate climbed. But Jadeja saw him charge out, and had him stumped off a wide delivery down the leg side. Iqbal Abdulla and Rajat Bhatia refused to give up, taking 12 off RP Singh’s last over, the 19th. But 14 off the last over proved to be too much, and Vinay Kumar throttled them with a succession of slower deliveries, to give Kochi the game. The result had seemed unlikely when Kolkata’s spinners restricted Kochi to 132. Gautam Gambhir had turned to spin after Brendon McCullum took Brett Lee for 15 runs in the third over. Right away, the left-arm spin of Abdulla and Shakib slowed the scoring-rate.The first breakthrough came when a Shakib delivery seemed to stop on McCullum, who edged a half-hearted cut to point. The introduction of Yusuf in the eighth over brought more trouble for Kochi. Jayawardene, who had got away with a close leg-before shout earlier against Abdulla, was given out lbw while sweeping, even though replays showed he had gloved the ball onto the pad.Yusuf struck in each of his next two overs. The slow nature of the pitch was further highlighted by Brad Hodge’s dismissal, bowled off an inside edge after playing the pull too early. Yusuf then trapped Parthiv Patel leg-before with a quicker one. Having slipped from 49 for 0 to 65 for 4, Kochi depended on Jadeja to take them to a fighting total. He responded by smacking a six each in overs 13, 14 and 15, before swinging Lee straight to long-on for 29. Balaji and Lee ensured that Kochi didn’t get away, but 132 turned out to be just enough in the end.

Wolves could save millions with Matija Sarkic

Wolverhampton Wanderers boast some serious talent courtesy of their youth sides.

The likes of Connor Ronan, Luke Cundle, and Dexter Lembikisa all look to have a bright future ahead of them. And joining them in that high potential category is five-cap Montenegro international Matija Sarkic, who – like Ronan – has spent the majority of his professional career on loan.

The 24-year-old, who had his performance dubbed “stunning”, arrived back from his loan at Championship side Birmingham City in January after suffering a shoulder injury that he is still nursing to this day.

The loan spell at the Blues was positive for the Montenegrin as he established himself as a first-team regular, conceding just 29 of the 75 goals that Birmingham conceded across the 46 game season. Along the way, Sarkic managed ten clean sheets and became a fan favourite at Birmingham City.

His impact was so great, that despite missing half of the season through injury, the Wolves loanee won the player of the season award, as per Tim Spiers who took to his Twitter page to state:

“Another Wolves loanee wins a player of the season award – Matija Sarkic at Birmingham after keeping 10 clean sheets in 23 games before dislocating his shoulder. GK coach Tony Roberts suggested last week Sarkic, aged 24, could be out on loan again next season.”

With number two goalkeeper and veteran of the game John Ruddy’s contract expiring in the summer, Sarkic must be wondering what more he has to do in order to deputise for Jose Sá.

The £1.6m-rated stopper’s impact in the division below has been sensational and even if Ruddy was to sign a contract extension, the 24-year-old would surely still rate himself above the 35-year-old who has been Lage’s go-to cup keeper this season.

If Ruddy is to depart at the end of the season, Lage lacks quality options in that position and would surely look to save millions by giving Aston Villa youth graduate Sarkic a fair chance in the side.
