Awful: Leeds fans unhappy with Alioski’s performance against Birmingham

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United’s hopes of securing a top-two finish in the Championship were harmed on Saturday when they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City.

And the Leeds fans took to social media to criticise Ezgjan Alioski for his performance.

The 27-year-old was once again deployed in the left-back position, but picked up a booking during a disappointing 90 minutes on the field.

According to WhoScored, Alioski made three tackles and had a pass success rate of just 84% at St Andrew’s.

But there were a number of occasions where the Macedonia international wasted promising positions, which led to frustration amongst the Leeds fans.

Thogden has ranked his top 5 sets of Championship away fans for Pl>ymaker FC. Did your club make the list? Find out in the video below…

And a selection have taken to social media to criticise a player who has seven Championship goals to his name during the 2018-19 campaign.

Leeds are now in serious danger of having to go through the playoffs this term.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the fans can be seen below:

Rangers: Must-win game for Gerrard has more than title hopes on the line

The Old Firm game is always a massive occasion, but on Sunday, it is fair to say that it is more significant for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers than it is for Celtic.

If Celtic win, it will see them with a virtually unassailable lead of 13 points, with just seven games to go.

But a Rangers win will close that gap to just seven points, and will give the blue half of Glasgow a chance — albeit a slim one — of overhauling their rivals.

Former Celtic player, Paul Hartley, told Sky Sports that Rangers have simply “got to win” and that Gerrard can not afford “any more slip ups”.

He said: “They’ve got to win. Ten points behind, eight games to go, they’ve got to go there and try to win the game.

“There’s no point in going there and trying to sit back. Celtic can afford the draw but they’ll be going to try to win the game. If they win it looks like that’s the title over.

“Rangers know they can’t afford any more slip ups. They are out of both cups, they may not have any more silverware for another year so it’s a massive game for them.”

We think, realistically, the game is more a case of Rangers consolidating a Europa League spot, than harbouring chances of winning the title.

A loss for Gerrard’s men, coupled with wins for Aberdeen at Hearts and Kilmarnock over Hamilton the previous day, will see the gap over third and fourth shrink to just five and six points respectively.

With only two games after this weekend until the split, it is vital that Rangers maintain their advantage over the chasers behind them, as failure to secure a top-three finish would be disastrous for the club.

What do you think about Rangers’ chances against the Auld Enemy on Sunday? Is it more important to look over your shoulders instead of ahead? Let us know your opinion…

Coleman’s war cry likely to prove futile with Everton’s rivals flying

It might have not always been pretty at times, but Everton got the job done in their 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Goodison Park last Sunday, dealing a satisfying blow to their rivals’ Premier League title chances.

Gaining something from the game for themselves, however, was also important for their own aspirations for the season, which right-back Seamus Cole has been speaking about.

The Breakdown

“It was important to give our fans a performance and it was a good point for us in the end,” Coleman told Everton’s official club website after the game. “The manager wanted us to focus on ourselves and what we are about. We want to be doing more in an Everton shirt and, ultimately, competing for European places.”

With six points separating the Merseyside club and seventh-placed Wolves, qualifying for the Europa League still remains a possibility.

That being said, Everton might have just left a bit too late in the race for European football given the form of Nuno Espirito Santo’s men and Marco Silva’s former side Watford.

Both teams have been more consistent than Everton this season and look capable of maintaining that six-point gap between themselves and the Toffees.

Everton fans, however, will undoubtedly welcome the fighting talk coming from Coleman, fired up from their team’s derby display, though they will be left feeling frustrated with the fact that such a performance has not been a regular theme this term.

Between the lines: Keith Curle suggests Charlie Wyke and Jack Ross are incompatible

[ad_pod ]

Charlie Wyke has desperately struggled to live up to expectation at Sunderland this season, but Keith Curle’s admission suggests that the reasons behind his form lie within Jack Ross’ approach.

What’s the word?

Wyke has struggled to find his feet at the Stadium of Light since completing his transfer from Bradford City last summer.

His decent goal scoring record at both Bradford and Carlisle hinted that Jack Ross had secured the services of a future talisman, but he has been incredibly underwhelming so far.

Curle, who managed the 26-year-old during their time together at Carlisle, has suggested that his struggle to find the net is symptomatic of the Sunderland manager’s preferred playing style, as per Sunderland Echo.

“Charlie needs a run of games and to be able to build up a relationship with a strike partner, and the team needs to put balls in the box.

“He’s better playing in a two. Charlie hasn’t got pace, so he won’t get away from people and run the channels.”

Ross’ preference for a lone striker is bad news for Wyke

The Black Cats are well in the hunt for automatic promotion this season as they seek to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking, and that’s largely down to Ross’ influence since taking charge last summer.

If Curle’s recent comments are anything to go by, it would appear that the Sunderland manager’s preference to operate with a 4-2-3-1 formation is serving as a detriment to Wyke’s form.

Naturally, the striker’s form can partly be explained by the injury problems he has experienced this season, but without a strike partner to bounce off he may continue to disappoint on Wearside.

Time will tell whether Curle has a point, but there is plenty of evidence from Wyke’s time at Sunderland so far to prove there is a weight of substance behind his claim.

Stryjek and Oviedo will be gutted they didn’t leave in January

Sunderland were busy on both the incoming and outgoing fronts in January, with numerous players brought in and a couple leaving.

The likes of Will Grigg, Lewis Morgan, Grant Leadbitter and Kazaiah Sterling are all impressive signings on paper to strengthen the Black Cats’ promotion chase.

They were brought in to replace Ethan Robson and Josh Maja, who have moved to Scotland and France respectively.

Those two names will not have been the only ones who wanted a move away, so here are two players who must surely be frustrated they did not get a transfer…

Max Stryjek

Stryjek returned to Sunderland just before the January transfer window from his loan at Eastleigh. His boss there, Ben Strevens, said that the 22-year-old had been suffering from homesickness and he was given permission by Sunderland to go and see his family in Poland over Christmas.

He had been in fine form for the non-league outfit, playing 13 times, but he does not look set to get any first-team action for Sunderland before the end of the season.

A loan to a side in the North or to a team in Poland may have been good options so he can continue to play regular football and hopefully, not suffer from homesickness again. As that was not the case, that could be a potential move for Stryjek in the summer.

Bryan Oviedo

In the latter stages of the transfer window, Sky Sports News reported that Sunderland are open to a potential departure for Oviedo, but it was never to materialise.

Oviedo remains in the North East, having not played in over a month and he has not been involved in the matchday squad for the past four games.

With a number of foreign clubs reportedly interested in the Costa Rican’s services, as well as a Championship club, he will be frustrated at not having got a move away last month.

When Everton thrashed Manchester City and gave Pep his ultimate nadir

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City almost certainly won’t win the Premier League title this season.

Nevertheless, they remain one of the most celebrated and critically-acclaimed teams of the last generation.

They did, after all, break the 100-point barrier in the top-flight and pipped a Liverpool team that lost just one league game all season to the title in 2019-20.

There was, of course, scrutiny on Guardiola when he arrived in 2016. He had managed one of the most beloved club sides of all time in Barcelona, and won a ridiculous amount of trophies while doing it. He had unlocked Lionel Messi’s potential and made him the greatest player in the world. He had taken tiki-taka to unfathomable heights.

Would it work in England? It was a question that needed answering.

Whenever he did fall at the hands of typical, frantic, explosive English football, the response was almost gleeful. Guardiola refused to lavish too much praise on the Premier League but defeats at the hands of rapid counter-attacking sides left nothing more to say, in the eyes of some.

The first such example came in December 2016, when Leicester tore them apart on the counter-attack. The Foxes’ 4-2 win was inspired by a Jamie Vardy hat-trick but Claudio Bravo and Aleksandar Kolarov in particular provided shambolic resistance.

The vultures had started to circle at that stage and Pep’s admission that he doesn’t get his players to work on tackling was held up as further proof that he just didn’t ‘get’ English football.

Yet, Leicester were still reigning champions and still in the Champions League, which allowed Guardiola and City a small amount of grace.

So, just over a month later, the Spaniard’s Etihad reign reached its nadir and this time, there was no place to hide.

Back in January 2017, his fifth-placed City side travelled to Merseyside to face Ronald Koeman’s Everton looking to go within seven points of leaders Chelsea. Bravo was still between the sticks but Kolarov had been dropped in favour of Gael Clichy.

Ageing duo Yaya Toure – who had recently patched up his differences with Pep – and Pablo Zabaleta were in midfield.

As you would expect, City dominated the ball but Everton were tenacious, energetic and clinical. They were everything their visitors weren’t and the struggles of Bravo gave Guardiola’s side no chance of masking the cracks.

Everton scored with their first shot of the game, through Romelu Lukaku, and then with every shot on target thereafter as Kevin Mirallas netted just after half-time to puncture any City hopes of a revival – before two young English starlets took over.

Tom Davies had desire and energy that City’s creaking midfield could not match all afternoon and when he burst between the lines on 79 minutes, it became clear that their defence couldn’t live with him either.

The academy prospect produced a sumptuous chip, his first goal for the club, to provide the moment of the match and send Goodison wild. There was still time for Ademola Lookman to add a fourth and City had been roundly beaten. They were now surely out of the title race.

Throughout his entire time in this country, never has Guardiola looked more ill at ease with the demands of English football.

City were punch-drunk and shell-shocked, and so was Pep.

Guardiola’s critics have never been louder than they were after City’s last visit to Goodison. They have been quiet for quite some time, however.

Charlton predicted XI to face West Brom

Charlton Athletic will be looking to get back to winning ways when they face West Bromwich Albion, having lost against Swansea City and Derby County in the league.

They also came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against the Baggies in the FA Cup, but it is likely that the two lineups walking out at the Hawthorns will look very different to the ones that did on Sunday.

Lee Bowyer still has various members of his squad that will be unavailable through injury, though there should be enough scope for him to switch things around for the league match.

With that in mind, FFC has predicted the lineup that will play for Charlton against the team that occupy an automatic promotion place alongside Leeds United, with six changes being made.

Dillon Phillips is the Addicks’ undisputed main goalkeeper, having made 26 league appearances this season, so it is only natural that he will play.

How much do you remember about football in 2019? Our quiz will test your knowledge…

A back three is deployed here, with Jason Pearce, Tom Lockyer and Naby Sarr occupying the places – the first two should be fresh after not featuring against the Baggies in the cup.

Chris Solly stays in the team that played on Sunday, building on the 12 starts that he has made in the league so far this campaign.

Alfie Doughty has been chosen to fulfil the left-wing-back role for this game. He hasn’t quite nailed down a specific position in the team, having played all the way down the left and in centre-midfield, so he could be used in the wing-back role by Bowyer on this occasion.

Conor Gallagher, Albie Morgan and Darren Pratley all come into the fold after being rested in the FA Cup. It says a lot about the prominence Morgan has earned, that he was kept out of the game, presumably so that he is ready for the league.

Andre Green and Josh Davison both remain in the team, after being utilised on Sunday. The duo will both hope to score their first goals for Charlton.

Meanwhile, ESI could give Bowyer something completely new with transfer swoop.

Revealed: 79% of polled Manchester United fans want to sign Hoffenheim forward Joelinton

[ad_pod ]

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United are malfunctioning in attack. Despite the talents of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku – who is particularly out of sorts – the Red Devils set up so defensively, leaving their attacking talent to become suffocated.

Whilst one player alone won’t change that completely, there are some who have the potential to rejuvenate Mourinho’s side and help them rediscover their mojo.

One man who could well become a star at Old Trafford is Hoffenheim star Joelinton. The Brazilian forward already has eight goals and five assists so far in this campaign, where he has notably caught the eye in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old has been one of the Bundesliga’s best players alongside Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson and striker Andrej Kramaric. Additionally, his traits, such as a high work-rate and his tendency to drift inside and play as an inverted winger seem tailor-made to Mourinho’s system.

As a result, we asked United supporters if they’d like to see Joelinton arrive in Manchester.

Conclusively, a huge 79% voted in favour of bringing the Bundesliga sensation to the club, as shown in the results below…

Revealed: 100% of Rangers fans want Coulibaly permanently

Rangers have enjoyed a strong start to the season under Steven Gerrard, who’s only defeat so far in his managerial defeat came in a 1-0 loss to Celtic prior to the international break.

Gerrard’s side responded to Old Firm defeat prior to the international break by getting back to winning ways against Dundee United, hitting four at Ibrox to rise to fourth in the table and providing themselves with a huge boost in confidence ahead of the Europa League clash with Villarreal on Thursday.

New recruits have gelled into the side well and Lassana Coulibaly, signed on loan from French side Angers, has impressed in the early stages of his career in Scotland – s0 we asked fans whether they would like the Mali international signed permanently.

The results were unanimous as 100% of supporters stated that they would like to see the 22-year-old drafted in on a permanent basis, which Rangers could do in January when the window reopens.
