Steven Fletcher could be the man to replace Rondon for West Brom

Last season was chaotic for the Baggies. First survival expert Tony Pulis was shown the exit door, before a disastrous spell under Alan Pardew saw Darren Moore come to the club.

A ray of light was how the club performed under Darren Moore, who lost just once in his last six games. Although they were still relegated, the players showed they could put in performances of a better nature.

West Brom seem to have made wise additions so far this summer. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone joined the club for £6.5m after Ben Foster exited the Hawthorns, and looks a very solid replacement judging by his performances for Aston Villa last season.

It looks like they are going to lose regular front man for many seasons Solomon Rondon, with Newcastle United one of several clubs interested in the striker.

With that in mind, West Bromwich Albion should sign experienced strike Steve Fletcher. The Scotsman is rated as being worth £3m by Transfermarkt. Goals was a real issue for the West Midlands club last season, and a major contributory factor to why they were relegated. They need to sign this experienced front man who could come in and make an immediate impact.

The experienced striker could be a like-for-like replacement for Rondon, and has a wealth of experience behind him. Sheffield Wednesday have a bloated squad, with seven senior strikers on their books, so would surely be willing to listen to offers for Fletcher. The big front man has plenty of experience, playing regular football at Sunderland in the Premier League. In a side with the talent of West Brom, given starting time Fletcher could be prolific in the Championship. A strong striker with a fierce shot, he would be a great fit for the Baggies.

West Bromwich Albion should drop everything and put Steven Fletcher to the top of their priority list if they want an immediate return to the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur fans expecting big things from Dele Alli

With just over three weeks to go until the new Premier League season gets underway, football clubs are gearing up for action.

On Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur faced Paris Saint-Germain in a pre-season friendly in Orlando.

It was a game that contained six goals, and Mauricio Pochettino’s side came out on top in a 4-2 triumph.

Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Harry Kane all got on the scoresheet, while Dele Alli also got some game time.

After the midfielder impressed last season by scoring 18 Premier League goals and scooping the PFA Young Player of the Year award, fans are expecting more from him.

At the young age of 21, Alli has cemented himself as a regular in the Spurs team, but the pressure will be on his shoulders in the upcoming campaign, particularly if the club do not strengthen the squad significantly.

As it stands, Spurs, who finished runners-up to Chelsea last season, have not brought in any new players as yet.

After Alli took to Twitter to express his joy in getting back out onto the pitch, the fans showered him with praise and their hopes for the upcoming season.

Spurs made Tuesday night all Chelsea’s

With Chelsea playing Liverpool and Arsenal within the space of a few days and Spurs facing Sunderland and Middlesbrough, it was the ideal week for the Lilywhites. Or it should have been, at least. Spurs have looked the strongest of the top six over recent weeks, winning matches convincingly and toppling Chelsea’s long winning streak. A draw to Manchester City kept them at arm’s length from the Blues at the Premier League summit, but this week was made for Spurs to pile the pressure on Chelsea, or at least to pull away from Arsenal and Liverpool.

Even with Sunderland fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, Spurs were understandably strong favourites. A victory was not only expected, it was a must for their campaign. Momentum has been calmed as a result of their draw at the Stadium of Light and Spurs failed to take significant advantage on a night when the rest of the top four all dropped points.

Instead, Mauricio Pochettino’s team were frustrated. Lamine Kone led a superb rearguard action from Sunderland and Spurs were limited to few significant chances. When Spurs’ starting line-up fails to break down an opposition, they lack the options from the bench that their rivals can turn to. Without a Cesc Fabregas, Daniel Sturridge or Kelechi Iheanacho to come on, Spurs have struggled to create chances on numerous occasions this season. Their recent run has seen their earlier woes forgotten, and understandably so, but the blunt performance against Sunderland refreshed the memories.

Tuesday night could, and should, have been all about Spurs. Sunderland have not won since December 17th, Arsenal went behind early on against Watford and at least one of Chelsea or Liverpool was going to drop points. Ultimately they both dropped points and, despite taking second place in the table, Spurs did not take advantage when everything was falling into place for them.

It was a golden opportunity to not only cement their chances of a top four finish, but make up invaluable ground in the title race. Instead, the title race is at risk of being no more should Chelsea win against Arsenal this weekend.

With that game kicking off at midday on Saturday, Spurs could be 12 points behind Antonio Conte’s side by the time they kick-off in the evening. In what should have been a routine six points and a great few days for the Lilywhites, Spurs are now under pressure at home to break even.

So Spurs are, bizarrely, going to be hoping their North London rivals can, at the very least, avoid defeat this weekend. But it’s Arsenal Spurs most closely resemble right now, having thrown away a glorious opportunity to steal a march on their rivals. Instead, they choked away to the Premier League’s bottom club.

Failing to beat Sunderland has undermined their credentials as Chelsea’s most realistic challengers, it has reopened debates about the creativity in their squad, and it has allowed Conte’s side to come out victors from a night when they looked likely to see their lead cut.

If Spurs have any chance of winning their first Premier League title this season, they must reproduce the form from before their trip to the Etihad Stadium against Middlesbrough this weekend. Disappointment against Sunderland will be as good as forgotten with a comfortable victory, but dropping more points will as good as see Spurs’ title chances written off.

Eleven Premier League stars whose value could soar at Euro 2016

We are now exactly seven months and one day away from the official opening of the 2016 European Championship in France next summer and it looks to be one of the most exciting tournaments for some time.

It may struggle to live up top the endless entertainment and drama of the 2014 World Cup, but it’s the first Euro that will be contested by 24 teams, as oppose to the former format of 16, and resultantly includes a number of dark horses like Wales, Austria, Northern Ireland, Iceland and Albania.

International tournaments tend to have a huge impact on player’s price-tags, as a barometer of their ability to ply their trade at a higher level. Take El Hadji Diouf, for example, who Liverpool shelled out a whopping £10million for in summer 2002 following his World Cup heroics for Senegal.

So with that in mind, Football Fancast have been running the rule over eleven Premier League stars who could see their value soar with impressive performances at next summer’s tournament.

With the January transfer window just around the corner, potential suitors might be advised to swoop six months early – before their targets’ value moves out of their price range…

GYLFI SIGURDSSON

Things didn’t quite work out for Gylfi Sigurdsson at Tottenham Hotspur, but he’s often looked capable of impacting at that top-four contending level since switching to Swansea City in summer 2014, going on to record nine goals and eleven assists in 47 Premier League outings predominantly through lethal set-piece deliveries.

The 15th-placed Swans have struggled as a collective this season, including the attacking midfielder. But he’ll be at the forefront of Iceland’s Euro campaign as their highest-profile player and impressive performances will undoubtedly catch the attention of bigger clubs – especially considering Sigurdsson is verging upon his peak at 26 years of age.

Marko Arnautovic

Many tipped Marko Arnautovic to prove an almighty coup when Stoke City snapped him up for just £2million in summer 2013 and the versatile attacker is starting to deliver on the hype, with five goals and two assists in 13 Premier League starts this season – including a match-winning brace against Manchester City last weekend.

The 26-year-old will be a huge part of Austria’s efforts at the tournament in France, having already bagged ten goals and 48 caps for his country and started all ten of their qualifying fixtures, so if Marcel Koller’s side exceed expectations he’ll certainly be handed a fair share of the credit.

He’s seen as a player whose questionable attitude has prevented a move to a major club before – but impressive showings at Euro 2016 could convince Europe’s elite otherwise.

CEDRIC SOARES

Cedric Soares is proving quite the find for Southampton since arriving from Benfica in the summer to fill Nathaniel Clyne’s almighty void, averaging 3.8 tackles, 2.6 interceptions , 2.8 clearances and 1.3 created chances per match from twelve Premier League outings.

Portugal have a number of options at right-back, not least including Wolfsburg’s attacking-orientated Vieirinha, but Soares is firmly in the mix, having picked up seven caps since his debut last October and five since the turn of 2015.

Aged 24, strong displays next summer could see a top club take a punt on Soares – especially considering the Saints snapped him up for just £4.7million.

DIMITRI PAYET

Unquestionably one of the Premier League’s shining stars during the opening months of the season, summer signing Dimitri Payet bagged five goals and three assists in twelve outings for West Ham until picking up a knee injury that will see him out of action until February.

But the attacking midfielder has always been on the fringes of the France squad and with Mathieu Valbuena and Karim Benzema both potentially absent next summer, recapturing that level of form after the three-month lay-off could slingshot Payet into Didier Deschamps’ starting Xi.

The Hammers acquired him for around £12million but could end up cashing in for double if the 28-year-old provides heroics in his home country.

Sebastian Prodl

Sebastian Prodl has been a rock at the back for a Watford side currently boasting the sixth-best goals conceded record and the second-most clean sheets of any Premier League club.

The defender is well-known from his Werder Bremen days and if he can transition that steely influence to Austria’s Euro campaign, some of Europe’s bigger clubs might start wondering why they didn’t make a contract offer when the 28-year-old’s Weserstadion deal expired last summer.

That does suggest, however, Watford might be prepared to let him leave for a tidy profit.

ROMELU LUKAKU

Half of Europe are keeping one eye on Romelu Lukaku at the moment, in no small part due to him notching up a rather incredible 53 Premier League goals at just 22 years of age – including a return of eleven in 15 this season.

Aspects of the 6 foot 3 striker’s game are still lacking but boasting power, pace and leap in almost equal measure, he’s emerging as a very complete striker and a well-rounded goal threat.

PSG and Manchester United have both been linked since the summer, so if Lukaku’s goals help Belgium to the latter stages we could see a much-anticipated bid that could well near double the Toffees’ original £28m investment.

JAMES MCCARTHY

Another Everton star whose performances next summer could slingshot him into the European elite.

James McCarthy’s energy, tenacity and consistent all-round game have made him one of the leading midfielders outside of the Premier League’s top four and he’ll resultantly be expected to contribute heavily to Ireland’s efforts at Euro 2016.

If the 25-year-old proves his ability at that level, something he’s more than capable of, long-term admirers like Arsenal and Manchester United will undoubtedly come knocking.

DELE ALLI

Tottenham Hotspur snapped up Dele Alli for just £5million but the former MK Dons star is already looking worth quadruple that sum, having made himself a permanence in the Lilywhites’ starting Xi and an increasingly important fixture in Roy Hodgson’s plans.

There’s high competition for almost every position in the England squad but the 20-year-old is likely grab a place purely with future tournaments in mind.

That being said, Alli is the kind of goalscoring midfielder who can change a game in an instant. If one of his goals helps England progress to the latter stages, that will undoubtedly have an effect on his price-tag.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri has really come to life over the last few games following his summer move from Bayern Munich, claiming two assists against Manchester City and proving a relentless threat down the right-hand side.

Many were surprised when Stoke City managed to land the stocky Swiss international and if his performance levels at Euro 2016 match that of the 2014 World Cup, long-term admirers like Liverpool will undoubtedly find themselves attracted to the 24-year-old once again.

With a young, promising and tight-knit squad, Switzerland could cause a few upsets next summer – and Shaqiri is likely to be centre-stage.

John Stones

His value is already through the roof, with some tabloids quoting figures as high as £45million.

But with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and even Barcelona all reportedly keeping one eye on John Stones, his value could further sky-rocket with a few impressive performances for England at Euro 2016.

The only doubt, however, is how much the 21-year-old will actually feature. His prodigious ability remains indisputable but having only picked up seven Three Lions caps thus far, Roy Hodgson may view it as a tournament too soon – turning to the more experienced likes of Phil Jagielka, Chris Smalling and Gary Cahil at the heart of defence instead.

JAMIE VARDY

If Jamie Vardy’s performances at Euro 2016 come anywhere close to matching his record-breaking Premier League form, England’s top clubs will undoubtedly come knocking for the Leicester City striker.

Indeed, the 28-year-old has bagged a whopping 14 goals in 15 appearances this season, including goals in eleven consecutive fixtures to set a new Premier League record, and the calls for him to start up front at next summer’s tournament, over the likes of Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane, are getting louder and louder.

Should Roy Hodgson oblige and Vardy excels in his starring role, the former non-league could leave the King Power Stadium for an incredible fee.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The rising Arsenal star has signed a scholarship deal with the north London club for next season and has already trained with the first-team. The youngster may have an eye on breaking into Mikel Arteta's elite squad after fellow academy player Ethan Nwaneri became the youngest ever Premier League player when he came off the bench at Brentford last season at the age of 15 years, five months and 28 days.

Obi-Martin cannot beat that feat but will be dreaming of a first-team debut at some point. He could be the next success story from the club's much-heralded academy.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Obi-Martin, who also scored a hat-trick for the under-18s against Southampton this season, is eligible for Denmark and England after representing both countries at youth level. He can also represent Nigeria due to his father's heritage.

We had to put in extra effort individually – Goswami

Jhulan Goswami believes that India Women put up a team effort to overturn the 1-2 deficit to win the ODI series against New Zealand Women and hopes they can carry the momentum into the upcoming series

Nikhita Sanotra and Tanveer Gogada09-Jul-20153:54

‘Want to look out for new combinations before T20 World Cup’ – Goswami

India women’s most experienced bowler Jhulan Goswami believes her team succeeded in turning around a 1-2 deficit against New Zealand women after recognising they were not playing the right combination in the early part of the series. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Goswami also credited captain Mithali Raj for leading from the front when the chips were down.”We were not getting the right combination in the first three matches” Goswami said. “So we decided to stick to the basics. In the first three matches, the openers were not getting a good start, but in the fourth match, the openers gave us a decent start – after that Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj took over, and the wicket was fantastic, it was a truly batting wicket.”Mithali always takes a challenge. Whenever something is wrong, she comes and leads the team from the front. In this case, the bowlers bowled well, the batters batted well and everyone showed a lot of responsibility and character.”The series started positively for India, who despite being bowled out for 142 in the first ODI, managed to steal a 17-run win. Goswami was the top scorer in that game with 57. However, the team lost the next two games.”We knew that individually we had to put in an extra effort,” she said. “We didn’t want them to win on our soil. So, that is when we tried a few combinations that clicked, and we also believed in ourselves, and that is why we came back strong as a team. In the first three games, we were all performing as individuals, but we knew we have to perform as a team”Goswami was the second highest wicket taker in the series with six wickets. Her economy, 2.39, was the best among the Indian bowlers and she also bowled nine maidens. Goswami stressed on the fact that her bowling good spells with the new ball allowed the spinners to mount more pressure.”I always enjoy bowling and love to take a lot of challenges,” she said. “I love to bowl on a flat wicket. You have to focus the whole time, your margin of area to bowl the right ball is very less. If you give up, the batsman can take over. If I have a good start then the other spinners can come and do their job. In this kind of wicket though, you cannot do much. So we just stuck to the basics and bowled more dot balls to build the pressure.”Although India’s top wicket-takers in the series were spinners – Rajeshwari Gayakwad with eight wickets and Harmanpreet Kaur and Ekta Bisht with six each – Goswami believes the team was not overly reliant on spin.”India is known for its spin attack. There is a turning wicket here and the ball spins,” she said. “It was difficult for the medium pacers to bowl in the right areas, as the weather did not support this. They played well, but we have quality spinners on our side and that’s our strength. And we like to play to our strengths.”Though India won the series, they lost out on valuable ICC Women’s Championship points, and now find themselves at the bottom of the table. They will now play three T20Is against New Zealand in Bangalore starting July 11, and Goswami is keen to see the same approach that gave the team success in the last two ODIs.”We have to capitalise on the first six overs, because in shorter format games, you cannot predict the results,” she said. “One bad over can change the match. We have a couple of changes in our side for this format and we’re looking forward to the T20 format. “
