Rangers’ Tavernier departure would be bad for Morelos

A couple of weeks ago the idea of James Tavernier packing his bags and leaving Rangers and Ibrox behind seemed high.

The club captain came under ferocious abuse from the fan base for a mistake against Hearts, failing to clear the ball and ultimately allowing them to score.

Furthermore, the right-back then claimed the Light Blues didn’t have the mentality to perform well under pressure and couldn’t deal with the situation when put in those circumstances. Revealing so in a set of programme notes, it wasn’t the best of ways to atone for your errors.

Tavernier has been a Rangers stalwart down the years, playing 242 times for them. However, his future has never been so unclear.

The defender was linked with a switch away last year but recent reports have seen him attract the interest of clubs in England. On top of that, it’s believed that their valuation of the skipper has plummeted from £8m to £4m.

Providing there is another transfer window in 2020, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was one of the first names leaving for pastures new.

Yet, this could be disastrous news for a certain Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian pitbull has only scored one goal in 2020, but like Tavernier, has been touted with a switch away. Whether he does or not isn’t completely clear.

However, if Morelos does indeed stay then seeing the Rangers captain walk away could be bad news for him.

After all, no player has been involved in more goals with the striker since he joined the Gers – 24. Behind Tavernier when it comes to the forward’s time in Glasgow is Ryan Kent. Their involvement together has been just nine strikes in comparison.

The weight of influence Tavernier has over Morelos’ game is rather incredible. The Englishman has laid on an impressive 17 assists for Rangers’ star man and they’ve racked up 76 wins in that time.

When both have been on the pitch, Steven Gerrard’s go-to striker in a crisis has racked up a colossal 72 goals. The man so often charged with delivering the ball into the box, meanwhile, has 46 assists.

When it comes to understanding each other’s games, they are like two peas in a pod. Tavernier picks out Morelos and he so often finds the back of the net.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

It’s no surprise, therefore, that the Colombia international’s poor form – just one goal all calendar year – has coincided with Tavernier’s wretched run.

The skipper leaving would undoubtedly be bad news for Morelos.

Meanwhile, Rangers already have their Gilmour REPLACEMENT in the palm of their hands…

Man Utd’s predicted XI to face Watford in the Premier League

After eventually making it past League Two side Colchester in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night, Manchester United return to Premier League action when they take on Watford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils have been in much better form in recent weeks in the top-flight, registering wins against rivals Tottenham and Manchester City, before drawing at home to a resurgent Everton. But against the Hornets, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will be facing a team down in the doldrums, languishing in bottom place with just nine points to their name.

It all points to an easy three points on paper for the Manchester side, but as they have already shown this season, they can come unstuck against the Premier League’s lesser lights – just look at their defeats to the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle. And with that in mind, below is a look at how United may line up against Watford.

After being rested in mid-week, David de Gea will no doubt resume duties as United’s number one goalkeeper. In front of him, Maguire will perhaps once again partner Victor Lindelof in central defence, whilst Luke Shaw may be dropped to the bench after playing two games in the space of a few days.

In midfield, Fred and Scott McTominay should come straight back into the starting line-up to renew their partnership, whilst Jesse Lingard could be the one key change in terms of the attacking positions – Juan Mata being the man to make way.

That means teenage starlet Mason Greenwood keeps out Wales international Daniel James from the starting line-up. Whilst he didn’t manage to get on the score-sheet against Colchester, his equalising goal against Everton last time out in the Premier League prompted Solskjaer to admit that the academy product is “making it hard” for him to leave out. Going by that sentiment, the Norwegian will surely have to thrust the 18-year-old into the spotlight from the off in the league.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans have reacted to this major announcement involved their club.

Liverpool shouldn’t underestimate Watford on Saturday

It’s the place where Mohamed Salah scored his very first goal in the colours of Liverpool last season. A six-goal thriller that ended in a 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road on the very first weekend of last terms, was to many, an indication that this was going to be another struggling season for Jurgen Klopp’s men, or so they thought.

But Liverpool went on to complete one of their more successful seasons in recent years that saw them play in the Champions League final and Salah win the Premier League Golden Boot with a record-breaking 32 league goals.

And although the Reds, who are title contenders this time around, head into Saturday’s clash with Watford as clear favourites, they should take a big hint of caution with them to avoid complacency come kickoff.

The Hornets have proven to be quite a different team when they host some of the bigger clubs and have already toppled Tottenham Hotspur, while they came extremely close to beating Manchester United as well.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, on the other hand, haven’t been at their very best in recent matches. An unconvincing 2-0 win over Fulham before the international break was preceded by three away trips where Liverpool were a bit off the pace, most notably a 1-0 win at Huddersfield and a shock 2-0 loss at Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

And although the current Liverpool team have shown a lot of improvement in terms of consistency and getting the job done despite not being at their best, Watford would fancy themselves to get a result and try to frustrate Klopp’s charges for as long as possible.

Watford have had a very good start to the season, that saw them win all of their first four matches, but failed to pick up a win at Newcastle United and Southampton in their previous two matches, leaving them in seventh position in the Premier League.

That position, however, should be a warning to Liverpool that they are very much to get tested on Saturday and that Watford could continue their surge to fight for a spot in Europe next season.

Stats don’t lie: Captain’s armband is weighing heavily on Harry Kane

[ad_pod ]

It’s difficult to understand how heavy one piece of fabric wrapped around a bicep can feel. But to describe a captain’s armband in such a way would be to ignore its prestige, its importance, its history, the team and the people it represents.

To captain any football team or club is a great honour – even at the most basic level, its a sign of uttermost respect from your peers – however to captain your country is a different category altogether. With that comes not only the pressure to perform but also distractions; media duties, maintaining a positive public profile amid heavy national interest, serving as a role model and of course, the requirement of leadership. It’s not a job for everybody, even if you are one of the best in the world.

Harry Kane certainly falls under that label. Forget about him being the best striker around – his level of goalscoring is only a shade shy of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s. He’s one of the best players around irrespective of position and if you’re examining his attributes on paper, the Tottenham star is everything a captain should be.

He leads through example in the same way as David Beckham, but he doesn’t come with all the baggage and dangers of super-stardom – his full focus is on football with no time for the limelight. But Kane can be aggressive and passionate too, and perhaps most importantly he has the ability and the right role in the team to deliver in the big moments. At the World Cup, his composure from the spot was vital to England’s push to the semi-finals.

And yet, even a player of Kane’s ability can find the captaincy tough to deal with, a little heavier than expected, a little more overawing than inspiring. That’s what the statistics suggest, at least at club level.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”289180″ player=”12034″ title=”A Futsal Player Walks Into A Denmark Squad…”]

Incredibly, Tottenham’s surprise defeat to Watford on Sunday was the seventh time Kane’s failed to score from the eight occasions he’s worn the armband for the north London club in the Premier League and perhaps even more incredibly, it was the sixth time Spurs have failed to win – their victory-rate with the centre-forward as captain is a miserly 25%. For a team that have been machine-like winners throughout most of Mauricio Pochettino’s tutelage, and for a goalscorer whose strike-rate is closer to one-in-one than one-in-two, that can’t be a mere coincidence.

In fairness, not every occasion that Kane’s captained Spurs has been a disaster. In the FA Cup, he’s captained Spurs seven times and produced a return of six goals. However, the quality of the opposition must be taken into account here, not to mention the fact those strikes were scored in just three of those games. A hat-trick over Fulham, back when they were in the Championship, and a brace over AFC Wimbledon is juxtaposed by scoreless encounters as captain with Manchester United in last season’s FA Cup semi-final and even Crystal Palace.

And it’s a similar story with Kane’s England captaincy too, which will be tested once again this weekend when the Three Lions host Spain in the Nations League. On the surface, the armband hasn’t affected Kane’s potency in the slightest – averaging better than a goal per-game, with 12 in 11 appearances, is a simply phenomenal record at international level. But scratch a little deeper and it’s difficult not to question how impressive that return actually is.

After all, while Kane left Russia with the Golden Boot, it was arguably the World Cup’s least impressive Golden Boot of all time – a hat-trick against Panama, possibly the least talented team involved in this year’s competition, three penalties in total, two six-yard-box poaches against another modestly-equipped country in Tunisia and of course the very forgettable inadvertent deflection of a wayward Ruben Loftus-Cheek shot.

You can’t contest the history books; Kane was the 2018 World Cup’s top scorer. But his actual level of performance only became more concerning the longer the competition went on, and to describe it as a month of vintage Kane would be pure fallacy.

Should Kane be England captain? Let us know by voting below…

There is always a debate too, over whether strikers really should be given the armband in any case. They’re by design selfish players, at least on the most part, so asking them to take responsibility for the rest of the team would seem to contradict that psyche – their full focus, at all times, should be how to find the back of the net.

Likewise, strikers are never quite in the position to see or be involved in everything that’s going on, at least not in the same way as centre-backs or central midfielders. You want a captain at the thick end of the action, always chirping in the referee’s ear, sticking up for his team-mates and getting them out of trouble when needed. When you have to jog 20 or 30 yards to represent the armband in every incident, it must become a little taxing – and your presence must become a little less effective.

Perhaps we’re being harsh on Kane. He is, after all, just 25 years of age and part of teams at both club and international level that contain plenty of even younger team-mates. That’s a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, before he’s even fully matured, and not much support either. Being a captain takes leadership but also the experience to handle difficult situations and high expectations. Kane, for all his brilliance as a footballer, maybe just isn’t quite at that level as a captain yet.

Should Pochettino keep the armband from Kane in the future? Let us know by voting below…

Ex-Everton man tells club to pay the money for Silva

Watford boss Marco Silva has emerged as Everton’s top candidate for their managerial vacancy, but they are having trouble prising him away from Vicarage Road.

The Daily Mail recently reported that a second offer of £8.5m to break the Portuguese coach’s contract was rejected by the Hornets.

Numerous media outlets have suggested that the Toffees have not given up on the 40-year-old, who took over at Watford just six months ago.

Silva impressed during his short spell at Hull City, despite the club suffering relegation to the Championship.

The ex-Olympiacos boss guided the team to four wins in his first four matches at home and they also reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, where they were beaten across two legs by Manchester United.

Richard Dunne, who came through Everton’s academy and spent four years in the first team, believes that the Toffees need to meet Watford’s demands if they want to get Silva through the door.

The former defender told talkSPORT:

“They have had enough time to sort it out and it is a surprise coming back into the Premier League [after the international break] and them still having no manager,

“If they want Silva from Watford, they should pay whatever is needed to be paid and get it done. The performances have not been good enough this season and they need to turn it around quickly.”

In Focus: Azpilicueta more important to Chelsea than Costa, Hazard

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta is of interest to Barcelona this summer as they hunt for a new right-back and, while he is said to be happy in London, would be open to the idea of a move back to Spain, according to Sport.

What’s the word?

Well, the Blaugrana have been strongly linked with a move for Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin in recent months, though are understood to have identified the Blues ace as a potential alternative.

Crucial to Antonio Conte’s table-topping side this season, the Spanish international is able to operate across the backline and could provide an heir at last for the dear departed Dani Alves.

As previously mentioned, the report claims the former Marseille man is happy with life in the Big Smoke, though would reportedly be open to the idea of returning to his homeland.

How big a miss would he be?

The notion of Azpilicueta leaving should be a major worry to Chelsea fans around the world. Such is the nature of his ability to slot in anywhere, the 27-year-old is undoubtedly one of Europe’s elite defenders and would be nigh on impossible to replace.

As is evident in the infographic above, his importance to the Blues’ cause cannot be understated and there’s even an argument to suggest he’d be harder to replace than either Diego Costa or Eden Hazard.

Five reasons N’Golo Kante will win Chelsea the Premier League

Chelsea were mightily unlucky to have dropped their first points of the new season as they were held to a 2-2 draw with Swansea in an incident full match at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Chelsea opened the scoring mid-way through a very one-sided half thanks to a fine finish from Diego Costa, who capitalised on some poor Swansea defending.

A Gylfi Sigurdson penalty and controversial Leroy Fer goal – in which he fouled Gary Cahill in the build-up – in quick succession gave the home side a shock 2-1 lead.

The glory was shared, however, when in-form Costa struck again with an acrobatic effort just past the 80-minute mark.

The post-game discussion was all about Swansea’s second goal however as Andre Mariner and dos officials missed Dutchman Fer’s foul on Gary Cahill which led to him being through on goal one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois whom he fumbled the ball just past.

The result cost Chelsea a well deserved three points and prevented Antonio Conte from becoming only the fourth manger in Blue’s history to win all four of his opening league fixtures.

Regardless of the result, however, there were many of positive signs. The form of Diego Costa, the energy going forward and the improved defensive stability are all plusses, however, one man who has had the biggest impact thus far is summer signing N’golo Kante.

The Frenchman has already shown why Chelsea splurged over £30 million on his signature this summer, and we think the midfield dynamo has the potential to be the difference at the end of the season when it comes to who lifts the Premier League trophy.

Here are our five reason’s why N’Golo Kante could win Chelsea the Premier League…

Missing Link

More often than not, especially last season, the gap between Chelsea’s defence and their midfield was far too big. Having N’Golo Kante in the side bridges that gap, and allows the team to move more effectively as a unit rather than there being a divide between attack and defence. Now, they go up

We Have The Ball

How can the opposition damage Chelsea when they don’t have the ball for any extended periods of time? The master at winning the ball back in midfield – without making any fouls either it must be said – Kante ensures that if a ball is lost he is the man to win it back as soon as he can. The pressure he exerts on opposition midfielders makes it extremely difficult to operate in their normal fashion.

Protecting the Back Four

Chelsea’s back four last season had little to no protection due to the poor form of Nemanja Matic, which was part of the reason the Blue’s struggled so much defensively throughout the campaign. This year with Kante and an improving Matic in front of them, there is much less pressure on the defence and having that extra body in front of them makes organising for Gary Cahill/John Terry easier.

Attacking Threat(ish)

Not only does N’golo Kante offer protection to the back four, he also – in a roundabout way – offers plenty going forward too. Kante will near enough always play the ball simple.

No long balls, extravagant passes or taking on his man in silly positions. Simple is enough. And those simple balls allow Chelsea to break quickly and effectively, leaving all the ‘difficult’ stuff so to say to the front four. Most attacks begin through the Frenchman, which is a credit to his genius.

No-one else has him!

As stupid as this may sound, there was a reason N’Golo Kante was the Premier League’s most wanted man this summer, with Arsenal, Manchester United and others also interested in signing the Frenchman.

The role in which he excels is common, but one he does in such a unique way he is indispensable to any side. If the former Leicester man had joined United, Arsenal, City or even Tottenham, it would be advantage them in the title race.

Everton facing shock NINE-POINT deduction – on top of 10 points already taken off them – as rival clubs including Leeds & Burnley lodge extraordinary £300m compensation claim

Everton are in danger of being issued a second points deduction in the Premier League and could be plunged into administration, a report says.

Toffees deducted 10 Premier League pointsClub violated financial rulesThree clubs to demand compensation from themWHAT HAPPENED?

An independent commission will decide if the Toffees should be deducted further points as three clubs – Burnley, Leeds and Leicester – are plotting to demand £300 million ($374m) in compensation from them. The claims that if the trio are successful, Everton would sustain another points deduction and would likely be in danger of going out of business. The Merseyside outfit are set to be taken over by 777Partners, but the company will pay a reduced fee should they be relegated or have to pay compensation to other teams.

Everton were handed a 10-points deduction on Friday after it was ruled that they violated the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. The Goodison Park club will appeal the decision and says they will fight hard against any attempt to force them to pay compensation to other teams.

DID YOU KNOW?

The 10-point deduction handed to Everton is the most severe in Premier League history. The punishment leaves them second-bottom of the division and two from safety. If they were to be docked more points, Sean Dyche's team would likely end up being relegated.

Lionel Messi wanting out, Neymar's injuries and Gigi Donnarruma's shaky form: 10 reasons why PSG's season has been so disappointing

Despite being set to wrap up the Ligue 1 title, the French champions have endured a miserable campaign, marked by controversy and poor performances

League title pretty much sorted, then. The bare minimum for Paris Saint-Germain will almost-certainly be met on Saturday when they likely wrap up the defence of their crown.

In fairness, Ligue 1 is better than it gets credit for these days. Yes, PSG walk the league every year, but this is not a simple division to win. Simply being the best team does not mean you are required to batter the other 19.

Still, despite the credit that PSG deserve, this has been far from a stable season. The Parisians are set to crawl across the line, looking a depleted and underwhelming side since the turn of the new year. What should have been a convincing, double-digit points win, will now look far less impressive. PSG will, in all likelihood, lose more games than upstart runners-up Lens, and have a worse defensive record than ninth-placed Nice.

For any other team, these would be acceptable blips. But for PSG, this nation-state-funded marketing behemoth, imperfections are frowned upon. And this year, there have been plenty. The new manager has been underwhelming. The star players have underperformed and, quite literally, disappeared at times. Meanwhile, the frustrations of an increasingly peeved fan base have boiled over.

GOAL takes a look at why what on the face of it is a successful season has been so disappointing for those in the French capital…

(C)Getty ImagesMessi wants out

Weren't we always heading this way? When Lionel Messi came back from the World Cup, everything felt just a little bit different. The Argentine had checked off the final box on his career and completed football in the most perfect of circumstances. Everything else seemed kind of irrelevant.

And so it proved to be. Since Qatar, Messi has still shown flashes of his brilliant best, but he's looked every bit a player without guidance or motivation. He is not above blame for PSG's struggles since January. In fact, his languid showings are part of the reason why the Parisians have fallen so short of expectations. But is perhaps unfair to expect a 34-year-old to be talismanic every week.

And once the Barcelona rumours started, it has seemed like Leo's head is already in Catalunya. The expectation that he will rejoin his former club has only further complicated things. To PSG's frustrated ultras, he is now a traitor, no longer fit to wear the shirt. And as the boos and jeers have intensified, Messi has become even more of a passenger in a string of poor performances.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesNeymar's ankles don't work (again)

An ankle injury for Neymar is a yearly occurrence at this point. This season, the Brazilian finally gave in and opted to have surgery. He'd probably been needing it for a while; the sprains have added up.

But it was also an untimely injury for a player who was having his best PSG season in years. Neymar was on track for 20 goals and 20 assists in Ligue 1, production enough to make the rest of this stalling campaign far more comfortable than it currently is.

Still, his most recent problem derailed things and could have a lasting impact on his career. Neymar is now 30, and although the operation was reportedly a success, surgeries are not so easily recovered from at his age — especially given the Brazilian's extensive injury history.

PSG seem to be faced with the decision to keep or sell Neymar every year, and every time it feels a bit disingenuous. But with Messi almost certainly out the door, Kylian Mbappe effectively controlling recruitment, and an angry fanbase losing patience, they might have to take a more serious view as to what to do with the most-expensive signing of all time.

Getty ImagesDefensive issues

It is everyone's favourite critique of PSG that their superstars do not run. And that gripe is not wrong. Mbappe, Messi and Neymar do not put anywhere near enough of a defensive shift in for the Parisians to succeed on the European stage. Football cannot be played 11-v-8 these days.

But the remaining eight haven't exactly been solid, either. Before the season, PSG seemed to have sorted a pretty strong backline. Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe and one of Sergio Ramos or Nordi Mukiele would form a solid back three, with exciting wing-backs on either side.

Injuries have hit in droves, with Mukiele and Kimpembe both having their seasons ended early. But Ramos and Marquinhos have been markedly below their best in recent months. Most worryingly, perhaps, PSG are simply getting undone by long balls over the top, their slow centre-backs struggling to recover against more athletic sides. These are basic errors, and the very type of goal a back three is supposed to prevent.

Indeed, if solid defensive-midfielder Danilo Pereira has been your most consistent centre-back, then there's probably a defensive issue or two that needs addressing.

GettyAn unreliable Donnarruma

PSG are not going to get rid of Gianluigi Donnarumma. They are probably not going to bench him, either. However, there might be a little bit of concern around the big Italian goalkeeper. Although he can still produce impressive saves in droves, the shot-stopper has been error-prone this season.

In truth, it's something that can be traced back to the 2022 Champions League last 16, where he made two big mistakes to allow Real Madrid to overturn a convincing lead and win the tie. Donnarumma hasn't quite been the same player since. He made an error that allowed Kingsley Coman to score for Bayern Munich in February and has been prone to a blunder or two against lesser Ligue 1 opposition in recent weeks.

There is also the distribution problem. The Parisians like to keep the ball. That, by nature, requires a goalkeeper who can throw, punt and pass with precision. Donnarumma, though, isn't a particularly good passer and is often found launching the ball out of play. And his occasional blunders when keeping things short have also been jarring. He is still, somehow, just 24-years-old, and will improve. But his errors have been costly at times this year.

-Possivelmente, as duas partidas devem acontecer no Brasil.
