Marvelous Nakamba picks up a knee injury

Aston Villa have suffered a potentially significant injury blow ahead of their Premier League clash with Norwich City at Carrow Road this evening.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury, although the seriousness of the issue is not yet known.

He tweeted: “Big blow for Nakamba sustaining a knee injury. The severity will be revealed later in the week but if it is bad, #AVFC may consider sourcing a replacement in the transfer window.

“Villa have acted on injuries before in the Jan window and will be flexible enough to do so again.”

The in-form 27-year-old has been a key player for Steven Gerrard’s charges in the opening period of the current campaign, and his absence from the matchday squad to face Norwich will come as a huge setback.

Steven Gerrard will be gutted

News that Nakamba is expected to be unavailable for the trip to Norfolk and potentially beyond will leave Gerrard feeling gutted, given his importance to the first-team squad.

The Zimbabwe international has forced his way into the starting lineup in recent weeks, featuring from the off in Villa’s last seven top-flight fixtures – including all five games of Gerrard’s short tenure.

And when taking a closer look at the defensive midfielder’s underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why he has become a mainstay for the Midlands outfit.

As per WhoScored, Nakamba has averaged two tackles per league game throughout 2021/22 – the third-highest total compared to his teammates – and 1.5 defensive dribbles, the highest tally amongst his colleague.

The midfield gem has also produced 0.8 interceptions and one clearance while recording a passing accuracy of 86.6%, highlighting his hugely effective displays of late.

With the busy festive schedule set to kick in, Gerrard will be disappointed to lose such a pivotal player at this moment in time, and he’ll be hoping the likes of Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey can step up in his absence.

And, in other news…Imagine him & McGinn: Gerrard can form scary AVFC duo with £21k-p/w “special talent”

Afghanistan ruled out of Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers

Afghanistan have been ruled out of the Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Toronto after failing to secure visas in time

Cricinfo staff31-Aug-2009Afghanistan have been ruled out of the Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Toronto after failing to secure visas in time.”This is a big blow to the Afghanistan team and it is a shame the event has been depleted in this way,” said David Thorley, the ICC’s tournament director. “The ICC has done everything within its power to assist in this matter but ultimately all boards are aware of their obligations in securing visas for their travelling parties to events.”Sierra Leone have also had delays with their visas. Cricinfo learnt yesterday that they submitted their applications to the wrong office of Canada’s immigration department, but the ICC remains hopeful that the documents can be issued in time for the opening round. “Everything is being done in an effort to make sure that happens,” the board said in a statement on Monday. The news for Afghanistan is a bitter blow whose youngsters impressed so much in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup earlier this year, beating Nepal to reach the final. The nine-team Under-19 Qualifiers gets underway tomorrow, a qualification tournament for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup to be staged in New Zealand.

Chanderpaul keeps Durham on top

A round-up of the first day’s play between Durham and Somerset at Chester-le-Street

Having taken control of the match by bowling Somerset out for 174 on the first day, Durham were indebted to Chanderpaul who overcame a collapse of 3 for 5 in five overs to convert his overnight 49 into a vital 117. Charl Willoughby was the pick of the Somerset attack with 5 for 56, but Ben Phillips was equally impressive with 3 for 46, including his former team-mate, Ian Blackwell, for a second-ball duck. Trailing by 98 on first innings, Somerset had hauled themselves right back into the contest by the close, as Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah added 41 unbroken runs for the first wicket.Warwickshire moved along to 179 for 1 against Worcestershire at Edgbaston. Fitness improvements please Kirsten

India’s ODI team assembled in Bangalore today for a four-day conditioning camp, leading into the tri-series in Sri Lanka early next month, and then the Champions Trophy in South Africa following immediately

Sidharth Monga27-Aug-2009The recess is over. India’s ODI team assembled in Bangalore today for a four-day conditioning camp, leading into the tri-series in Sri Lanka early next month, and then the Champions Trophy in South Africa following immediately. As they sat for the team meeting in the morning, it was the first time that all the players had come together in close to seven weeks – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Suresh Raina had been away for longer. The first day of the camp involved the meeting and a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy gym. Gary Kirsten, the India coach, had given the team impromptu fitness tests two weeks ago, and he liked what he saw today.”Based on what we saw two weeks ago, there have been significant improvements from every player, which means they are taking it seriously,” Kirsten said. “That’s all we wanted. The players have realised that this is a part of the game that they all want to improve on, and the players have taken on that responsibility.”The big question, though, is whether four days are enough for a team to get into the international mode and up their intensity for a packed season ahead. With the BCCI’s Corporate Cup lined up, Kirsten had no choice, because he didn’t want to eat into the break that the players had finally got, which he thought was essential.”It was very important for us and the guys to have at least a six-week break,” Kirsten said. “It’s the longest break they have had for a long time. It was important that they were mentally fresh for that process.”With a lot of cricket coming up, the Corporate Cup – and quite a few players playing in that – and then three games in Sri Lanka, then we have a longish period before we play our first game in Champions Trophy before the 26th. We feel, with that included, we have got quite a lot of preparation time.” Kirsten also said the time they would get in South Africa would be crucial for the preparations as well. The ‘short’ word was not far away, but Kirsten said he wasn’t unduly worried about the troubles the young batsmen have had handling the short-pitched stuff recently. “I only saw the short-pitch ball being a problem in just one game in the T20 World Cup, so I don’t see that as a problem. We are playing the 50-over version now, which is very different from T20. But within, in terms of our gameplans, our training, our structures, we try and cover every base that we need to cover to make sure we give ourselves best chance of success. That might be one of it, but there might be a whole lot others.”Over the next three days, they will get to working on the various skill sets – both in nets session and open-wicket practice at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The players can expect the coming days to be as intense as the camp they had around this time last year in Bangalore, or the five days they spent in New Zealand before their first match. Kirsten has a reputation for being an unobtrusive but tough taskmaster, and more of it seemed in store.”We have put a big focus on our conditioning, because it is a nice break they have had,” he said. “It’s given them time to work on that side of their game. Equally, it’s time for us to start upping the intensity on our practising. We are going to be hitting a lot of balls over the next three-four days, the guys are going to be bowling a lot to get back on track.”

Liverpool interested in Marco Asensio

Liverpool have not been shy when it comes to scoring goals in recent years, with the Merseyside club managing to net more than 80 times in three of their four previous Premier League seasons.

Admittedly, things took a bit of a dip last season with Jurgen Klopp’s side managing to score just 68 goals.

Things look to be getting back on track for the Reds when it comes to scoring though with the team already managing to net on 17 occasions in just seven league games, more than any other club at this point in the season.

However, it has been reported that the Merseyside club are looking to strengthen their attacking force at some point in the near future.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been reported by Spanish media outlet ABC that Liverpool, as well as Italian clubs Juventus and AC Milan, are interested in signing Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio, who is apparently not happy with the number of minutes he’s played for the Spanish club so far this season.

Asensio joined the Spanish giants back in the 2015 summer transfer window from fellow La Liga side RCD Mallorca for a fee of £3.51m.

Overall, the 25-year-old, who is currently valued at £31.5m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 200 appearances for Madrid across all competitions in which he has managed to score 40 goals and provide 22 assists along the way.

During his time with Carlo Ancelotti’s side, Asensio has managed to win a number of domestic and European trophies, including two La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

Taking all of this into account, it’s easy to see why these clubs, including Liverpool, would apparently be interested in signing him.

Also, given how the Spaniard, who was once described as “magical” by Casemiro, has only started two of their opening eight La Liga games of the season so far, it’s easy to see why he may not be too happy at the moment and could be looking for a move elsewhere.

In our view, given how unhappy Asensio apparently is with his playing time at the Spanish club at the moment, we feel that a move to Liverpool probably wouldn’t immediately give him the regular game time he is after. The Reds’ current right-winger Mohamed Salah has nine goals and three assists in nine appearances this season after all.

That said, it would be a masterstroke from Michael Edwards to sign him. One thing Liverpool lack is depth in attack but a player of Asensio’s mesmeric qualities would undoubtedly benefit them as they aim to go deep in Europe.

His assertiveness in the pass will also do wonders for Liverpool, suggesting any potential price tag will certainly be worth it. The Spaniard’s pass success rate of 89.6% this season is better than Virgil van Dijk’s for instance and is only beaten by Curtis Jones.

If Liverpool do sign Asensio, he could prove to be a big player for the Reds in the future given his relatively young age and immense potential in the game.

Dyson puts pressure on latecomer Gayle

Chris Gayle finally arrived in England two days before the first Test at Lord’s and will face huge pressure to perform with coach John Dyson clearly far from pleased about his captain’s timing.Gayle’s flight landed at 6.45am and he trained with the squad during the afternoon. However, regardless of the comfort he will have flown in, and the benefit of South Africa’s time difference to the UK being minimal, he has left himself facing huge criticism if he doesn’t lead from the front.Gayle, along with Fidel Edwards who arrived yesterday, were given No Objection Certificates (NOC) from the West Indies board until May 2, but Gayle was granted two further days so that he could squeeze in one more match with the Kolkata Knight Riders. It was a decision that Dyson had no say in.”I just have to work with that,” he said. “We thought the original NOC was the barest minimum but you just have to work with what happens. Our board considered that an extra day or two didn’t matter so that’s that. It’s one of the things these days that you have to work with.”We all knew the IPL was on and we knew the players would be arriving when they have. Ideally you would have your full squad here, but you have to work with how it is. Medical guys say you need time to recover from flights, coaches say you need practice and then you get players saying they can handle not doing that. I suppose time will tell.”Gayle was one of the players most unhappy that this tour was shoe-horned into the schedule at the last minute after the players had already signed IPL deals, but it certainly doesn’t create a glowing image when a captain feels he only needs to arrive 48 hours before a major Test. However, it isn’t the first time that a West Indian player has cut it fine arriving for a Test as last year Dwayne Bravo was flown in on a private jet on the eve of the opening match against Australia in Jamaica.”Chris is a big-match player,” added Dyson. “He handles pressure very well and has played well in all formats of the game over the last 12 months. He says he is in good form.” But Dyson clearly needs convincing that what Gayle says can be translated onto the field. One bonus is that the heel problem Gayle experienced in South Africa which required a runner against Bangalore Royal Challengers isn’t a concern. The West Indies top order desperately needs their captain to perform after failing to adapt to English conditions during their warm-up matches. They crashed to a 10-wicket defeat against the England Lions, which followed on from being bowled out for 146 against Essex. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, as is the norm, has found some form and Lendl Simmons has played well but apart from that it is slim pickings. Even Ramnaresh Sarwan has started edging a few to the slips.”That’s a concern,” Dyson admitted. “Our only opener here so far on this trip to get runs is Lendl Simmons and he has played quite well. He also finds conditions far different but has managed to make the adjustments. It’s difficult for the guys coming out of the Caribbean. They get hit by what they think is very cold conditions and then they get totally different wickets. Those who haven’t had experience here do take time.”However, Dyson still retained belief that his side can pull their fortunes around to make a competitive series. “When we get the full side on the park for the Test, our big match players will be in the side together for the Test and that’s what we have been working towards.” A performance from their captain would be the perfect start and could also build a few bridges along the way.

Che Adams let Southampton down vs Man City

Southampton produced a superb performance against Manchester City on Saturday as they held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

The Saints have now drawn four straight games in the Premier League, having picked up a point apiece against Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham heading into the weekend. This is after they lost 3-1 to Everton on the opening day of the season, with Ralph Hasenhuttl making his side hard to beat since.

Despite the positive result yesterday, one player who struggled to make his mark on the game for the Saints in Manchester was Che Adams.

The Southampton forward was selected up front alongside Adam Armstrong after missing out against West Ham but failed to stake his claim for a place in the starting XI next weekend. He struggled offensively and in general play as he was unable to make his mark on the match.

Going forward, Adams did not make an impact. As per SofaScore, he had one shot (which was off target) and created one chance in 68 minutes, whilst attempting zero crosses, long passes or dribbles. This shows that he did not provide enough quality to test the Manchester City defence, with Ederson untroubled by the Scotland international throughout the match.

His general play was also concerning. As per SofaScore, he lost 69% of his duels on the pitch, losing eight of his 10 aerial battles and one of his three duels on the ground. He also had just 20 touches of the ball, less than half of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy’s 41, and lost possession nine times from those 20 touches.

This shows that he was not strong enough physicality to win his 50-50s against Manchester City defenders and also that he was not secure in possession of the ball. He was unable to provide a reliable outlet up front for the Saints, which meant that they were not able to build upon the clean sheet the back four was able to preserve.

It will be interesting to see who Hasenhuttl selects up front against Wolves in the Premier League next weekend after this disappointing performance from Adams. He let the Austrian down, but he may be given some slack given that it was against the reigning champions, with a Carabao Cup clash against Sheffield United potentially giving him an opportunity to redeem himself in midweek.

AND in other news, 86% duels won: Southampton gem repaid Hasenhuttl’s faith with superb Man City display…

Man Utd linked to Victor Osimhen

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring the situation of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen after identifying him as a possible alternative to Erling Haaland.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), the Red Devils are amongst a host of club’s interested in securing the 22-year-old’s services next summer.

The report claims that fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen on Osimhen’s signature, while Spanish giants Real Madrid are also listed as potential suitors.

It’s stated that Napoli would demand no less than £100 million for their prized asset given they stumped up a fee which could rise to £70m to prize him away from Lille back in 2020.

With the Nigeria international’s current contract at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium next expiring until 2025, owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is under no pressure to sell, meaning this could be a tricky deal to complete.

Solskjaer would love him

Several of European football’s heavyweights have been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland thanks to his £65 million release clause coming into play in 12 months’ time.

However, only one side will be able to snap up the outstanding Norway international, possibly leaving the likes of United searching for alternative options.

And it’s easy to see why the club’s recruitment department are believed to have identified Osimhen as a potential future star given his recent exploits for Napoli, both in the Europa League and Serie A.

After injuries limited the 6ft 1 beast to just 10 goals in 24 league starts last term, the former Wolfsburg ace has started the current campaign in emphatic fashion.

Osimhen has bagged six goals and provided one assist in just six outings in all competitions in the opening weeks of 2021/22, earning praise from Cagliari coach Walter Mazzarri.

“Osimhen is phenomenal because he runs alone at five players and gets through,” Mazzarri told DAZN (as quoted by Football Italia). “If you look at genuine scoring opportunities, compared to the number Napoli created lately, I didn’t see that many.

“We intentionally kept a deep defensive line, because if we pushed higher like the other teams, we’d concede four or five like they did with Osimhen able to run into space.

“Obviously, Napoli had more possession and attacked more, but this was an intentional approach.”

Osimhen’s effort helped the Azzurri to a 2-0 victory over Mazzarri’s charges on Sunday in another display of his incredible finishing ability, power and pace.

The youngster’s room for improvement makes him an extremely exciting and tempting target for football’s top teams, meaning United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would surely love to have him at his disposal.

Therefore, football director John Murtough must sanction a swoop for the Osimhen if the Red Devils miss out on Haaland, providing Solskjaer with a long-term successor to the ageing pair of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

And, in other news…Imagine him and Pogba: Man Utd must complete swoop for £60m beast, he’s a big upgrade
