Early Newcastle team news emerges

Early Newcastle United team news has emerged ahead of their clash with Liverpool this weekend…

What’s the latest?

Magpies reporter Dominic Scurr has provided an injury update as the club prepare to take on the Reds at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

Three key players remain out injured for the Toon as they all bid to make their comebacks before the end of the current campaign.

Scurr Tweeted: “Good to see Isaac Hayden pictured back in full training for #NUFC this week, as suggested by Eddie Howe. Still no Callum Wilson or Kieran Trippier. Ryan Fraser also remains out ahead of Saturday’s match against Liverpool.”

Supporters will be gutted

This update will surely leave the supporters gutted as they remain in the dark over when the trio will make their respective returns to first-team action.

Hayden being back in full training is good news amongst the bad but he will not be an option for Howe until next season at the earliest. He was omitted from the club’s 25-man Premier League squad and this means that he will not be able to play again this season, irrespective of his fitness situation.

Fraser, Wilson and Trippier, however, are all eligible to play and are all big blows for the Toon as they have each enjoyed impressive campaigns in their own right.

Wilson remains the club’s top scorer in the division with six strikes in 14 starts. The Englishman also scored 12 times in the league last term – proving that he is a reliable goalscorer at this level and the fans will surely want to see him back out on the pitch as quickly as possible.

Trippier, meanwhile, has averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.67 across four appearances for the club since joining from Atletico Madrid. He has scored two goals for Howe’s side and averaged an eye-catching 6.0 tackles and interceptions per game.

Fraser has also emerged as a key player for the manager he worked with at Bournemouth. He has chipped in with two goals and three assists in 18 starts this season whilst averaging a solid SofaScore rating of 6.88. The Scot has been a respectable performer out wide and is a player Howe will want back as soon as he is fit.

Therefore, the fans will be gutted with all three of them being out injured as it is a big blow to the side and they will be keeping their fingers crossed that they will all be able to feature in the final few matches of the campaign.

Newcastle transfer news on Targett

Lee Ryder has been left buzzing over some comments that have now emerged from Newcastle United left-back Matt Targett in the build-up to the clash against Crystal Palace.

The Lowdown: Permanent deal?

It has been reported that the St. James’ Park faithful are now ‘poised’ to make their loan deal for Targett permanent in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The whole deal would cost around £15m plus the initial loan fee, which includes a bonus for if the Magpies avoid getting relegated from the Premier League, something that seems inevitable ahead of tonight’s clash with the Eagles.

The Latest: Targett comments

Speaking to The Chronicle, Targett has now admitted that he ‘hopes’ that he can stay in the North East permanently, as he is ‘enjoying’ his time on Tyneside.

The Aston Villa loanee recalled when he first signed, claiming that it was a ‘massive challenge’ to impress new manager Eddie Howe and help get the club out of the relegation zone.

Sharing the article on Twitter, journalist Ryder was buzzing over Targett’s claim, saying that it is a ‘huge positive’ for the Toon Army that he wants to stay.

The Verdict: Big boost

With Targett set to feature tonight when the Magpies play Palace at home in the top flight, another three points would take them onto 40, meaning that they will surely be safe.

Thus, they could then look to sign Targett from Villa this summer for the fee mooted.

The Englishman currently ranks as their fourth-best performer in the Premier League so far this season, and ranks highly among his teammates in terms of average tackles, interceptions, clearances, key passes, and crosses per game (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, he has certainly made a good impression in his short time, and so the fact that he wants to stay is a big boost for the club.

Watson blames ICC for Pakistan mess

Shane Watson has questioned whether the ICC really wants to eradicate match-fixing and spot-fixing from cricket due to fears the problem might run too deep

Shane Watson has questioned whether the ICC really wants to eradicate match-fixing and spot-fixing from cricket due to fears the problem might run too deep. A day after confirming he had reported two approaches from bookmakers during last year’s tour of England, Watson blamed the ICC for allowing the issue to fester.Watson said the fact a newspaper was responsible for highlighting the irregularities involving Pakistan’s recent performances, which were revealed during the fourth Test in England, showed the ICC’s system was unsuccessful. “The ICC anti-corruption unit is not really working,” he said during a sponsor’s function in Sydney.”That’s totally to do with the ICC, so they really need to step in and really get to the bottom of it. Maybe they don’t want to get to the bottom of it because it might run too deep.”The ICC has defended its approach but Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive, did admit the anti-corruption and security unit had no power to arrest or go undercover. Lorgat has promised “prompt and decisive” action if any of the players are found guilty.Watson said the situation needed to be sorted out “as soon as possible” to maintain credibility and interest in the game. “People might turn away from cricket because they don’t know [whether] what they are seeing is actually the true facts of cricket,” he said.Meanwhile, Mark Taylor, the former Australia captain, said talk of banning Pakistan from world cricket was not justified. “I don’t agree with that, I think it’s too harsh a penalty for one nation,” Taylor, a Cricket Australia board member, said in Sydney.”If they have one person, two people, three people involved in match-fixing or fixing certain deliveries … to throw the whole nation? No, I’m not for that. I think it would not be a good thing for world cricket to have Pakistan not involved.”

Tottenham trying to sign Yves Bissouma

Taking to Twitter, journalist Fabrice Hawkins has made a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eyeing late move?

It is believed that the Seagulls ace is firmly on manager Antonio Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici’s respective radars as a frantic deadline day in N17 continues to produce reports.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Bissouma has been mentioned as a target for Tottenham before the 11pm deadline, with the Daily Mirror recently claiming that a move for the Mali international is indeed a possibility today.

This comes as the midfielder’s contract is set to expire in 18 months’ time as things stand, putting some pressure on his club to potentially sell up while they can.

The Latest: Tottenham discussions ‘intense’…

Sharing what he knows, reporter Hawkins has backed Tottenham’s interest and goes one step further, lifting the lid on ‘intense’ final day discussions.

He claimed on Twitter: “Yves Bissouma could leave Brighton. Three clubs are trying to sign him: Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United. The discussions are intense. Brighton are asking for at least 45 million euros (£37.4m).”

The Verdict: Ambitious…

The Mali midfielder would certainly boost Conte’s options no end, especially considering that he has been called a ‘monster’ by members of the press (Aaron Stokes, Daily Star).

He has also averaged more tackles per 90 (3.6) than any Lilywhites player in the Premier League this season (WhoScored), not to mention the fact that he is still just 25 years old and therefore only about to come into his footballing prime around now.

A proven Premier League player, signing Bissouma would certainly be a real statement of intent by Paratici and Spurs.

Journalist shares big Ndombele exit update

According to Daily Mail reporter Sami Mokbel, Antonio Conte believed he could turn Tanguy Ndombele’s Tottenham career around, but that is now no longer the case.

The Lowdown: Ndombele booed off…

The club record signing has been at the centre of reports linking him with a move away from Spurs after he was booed off during the Lilywhites’ 3-1 FA Cup third round win over Morecambe.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ndombele slowly walked off the pitch and headed straight down the tunnel, drawing the wrath of Tottenham’s home supporters as he refused to vacate the pitch with any real haste.

The Frenchman, among other players who could potentially leave, has his future up in the air under manager Antonio Conte with the Spurs head coach now making a major decision behind-the-scenes.

The Latest: Conte performs Ndombele U-turn…

According to Mail reporter Mokbel, the former Chelsea manager is ‘no longer convinced’ by Tottenham’s midfield man despite originally thinking he could ‘get a tune’ out of the player.

In his report, the journalist explains that Conte ‘had originally planned for Ndombele to stay at the club’ but is now ‘ready to cut his losses’ this month – greenlighting his January exit.

The Verdict: For the best?

Averaging more completed dribbles per 90 than any Spurs player in the Premier League last season (WhoScored) whilst proving his undoubted ability in flashes, doubts have mostly surrounded his application and attitude.

On a reported £200,000-per-week, one of the club’s highest earners, chairman Daniel Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici could be looking for ways to cut the club’s expenses and fund much-needed new additions by offloading Ndombele this month.

If a willing buyer comes in, it would arguably be foolish of Tottenham not to entertain selling before January 31 and indeed cut their losses on a player who has already been given time to prove his worth.

Liverpool table lucrative Zakaria offer

According to Spanish news source El Nacional, a major update has come to light involving Liverpool and soon-to-be free agent Denis Zakaria.

The Lowdown: Reds eye Zakaria move…

The Switzerland midfielder is on his way out of Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of 2021/22 as a plethora of clubs, including Liverpool, take a keen interest in signing him.

Zakaria can sign a pre-contract with overseas clubs this month or opt to wait until summer before deciding his next destination, with the Reds, Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona all linked with a move (El Nacional).

The Bundesliga ace, once likened to Bernabeu star Toni Kroos by German football legend Lothar Matthaus, could come as a real snip for no transfer fee as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp apparently eyes a move.

Sharing an update on Zakaria’s potential move to Anfield, El Nacional have provided a promising piece of news.

The Latest: Spanish source makes promising Zakaria claim…

According to their sources, as Real Madrid president Florentino Perez aims to bring Zakaria to the Spanish capital, Liverpool could well and truly throw a spanner in the works as they ‘upset’ the La Liga club’s plans ‘in recent days’.

Indeed, the Reds have apparently made a lucrative offer, putting a ‘higher salary on the table’ than Madrid as Klopp personally believes Zakaria would be a ‘good recruit’.

While the 25-year-old takes his time to consider all proposals, El Nacional stated that ‘everything indicates that he will end up landing in Anfield’.

The Verdict: Promising update…

As all signs point towards Liverpool being favourites to land the defensive midfielder, we believe he could certainly be a great acquisition for Klopp if they can win the race for him.

According to WhoScored, Zakaria has averaged a tidy 90.1% pass accuracy over his 15 league starts for Monchengladbach this season. By comparison to Liverpool’s regular starters in the English top flight, only Curtis Jones has racked up a higher success rate (92%), perhaps supporting the theory that the Swiss beast would be an astute addition.

Highly versatile, the 25-year-old can also operate as a centre-back when required, so the 6 foot 3 powerhouse could potentially kill two birds with one stone for Klopp.

Lauded as ‘devastating’ by Italian football coach Uli Forte, this could be one of the best free deals of the summer, and we urge Liverpool to get it done.

O grupo denominado “Feministas do Galo” pediu um posicionamento do time mineiro.

Cricinfo’s preview of the first Twenty20 between Australia and West Indies in Hobart

Sunday, February 21, Bellerive Oval
Start time 1835 (0735 GMT)The Big PictureThe one-day series has been one-sided but Twenty20 tends to close the gap between teams and Australia are yet to beat West Indies in the format. The prospect of Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, David Warner and Shane Watson striking, and Shaun Tait and Kemar Roach blitzing them at 150kph-plus does hold some appeal. For West Indies, the aim is to finish the tour with some positives ahead of their home series against Zimbabwe and Gayle believes the format gives them their best chance of success. “We’ve got a lot of allrounders in our team so the shorter form of the game definitely can suit us,” he said. “We can be a bit more dangerous in the T20 games.”For Australia, the plan is to see some new players in action ahead of the ICC World Twenty20. Steven Smith, Travis Birt and Daniel Christian should feature either in Hobart or in the second game in Sydney, and there will be Caribbean trips up for grabs if they perform well. They are also aiming to move one step closer to an unbeaten home summer across all three formats. The match is a milestone for Bellerive Oval, which is hosting a night international for the first time after having floodlights installed during the off-season and unlike the ODIs, this game is already a sellout. There is also a curtain-raiser Twenty20 to be played between the Australia and New Zealand women’s teams, part of which will be broadcast in Australia in the lead-up to the men’s match.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WNLLL

Watch out for…How can you not watch out for Chris Gayle in a Twenty20 match? He is the only man to have scored a Twenty20 international century and last time he faced Australia in the format, he mauled them with 88 from 50 balls in an innings that won him Cricinfo’s award for the best Twenty20 performance of the year. In the past year he has launched balls onto the roof at The Oval and the WACA and into someone’s backyard in Napier. Bellerive residents should make sure their home insurance policies cover not only acts of God but also acts of Gayle.Travis Birt’s Twenty20 international debut against Pakistan earlier this month was a forgettable occasion as he was bowled trying to paddle sweep his second ball. He will have learnt from that experience and will feel more comfortable in the quieter surrounds of his home ground in Hobart rather than a busy MCG. He is also coming off a wonderful 93 this week that surged Tasmania in to the FR Cup final.Team newsAustralia are fine-tuning their team ahead of the World Twenty20, which starts in late April. There are several fresh faces in a squad that does not feature Ricky Ponting, who has retired from the format, or Michael Hussey, who appears to be out of favour in Twenty20. The allrounder Daniel Christian is hoping to make his debut but in a squad of 14, he may have to wait until the second match in Sydney for his first appearance.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 David Warner, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White, 6 Travis Birt, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Steven Smith, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Dirk Nannes, 11 Shaun Tait.West Indies are using the same squad as they had for the ODIs, which means that their options are limited. Travis Dowlin hasn’t covered himself in glory in the 50-over games but the gritty back-up batsman Brendan Nash will find it hard to dislodge him. Kemar Roach should return to the line-up having been out of the past three ODIs.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Travis Dowlin, 3 Lendl Simmons, 4 Narsingh Deonarine, 5 Wavell Hinds, 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Dwayne Smith, 9 Darren Sammy, 10 Nikita Miller, 11 Kemar Roach.Pitch and conditionsBellerive Oval usually provides a good batting surface and in the two Big Bash matches this summer, the first-innings totals were 194 and 167. The forecast for Sunday in Hobart is fine and 25C.Stats and trivia West Indies and Australia have met in only two Twenty20 internationals and West Indies won them both, in Barbados in 2008 and at The Oval last year Australia’s recent record in the format is miserable; until their win over Pakistan a fortnight ago they had lost their previous five completed Twenty20s Michael Clarke is one of 24 men who have played at least 20 international Twenty20 games; of those, only Umar Gul, Lasith Malinga and Mark Boucher have hit fewer sixes than Clarke, and only that trio have lower high scores than Clarke’s 37Quotes”We’ve got a good record against Australia, we’re two and zip. The guys are pretty confident. The shorter version of the game we’ve got guys that can destroy any attack – Pollard, Smith and Chris Gayle – so it’s going to be good fun.”
David Williams, the West Indies coach”If you look at the balance of our team and the balance of their team, you’d probably still think that we’ve got a fair advantage over them.”
Ricky Ponting has retired from Twenty20s but will be in Hobart to watch his colleagues

Urgent Kallis turns to oxygen aid

Jacques Kallis is using an oxygen chamber to try and speed his recovery from the fractured rib that has threatened his participation in the opening Test against England at Centurion Park.Kallis suffered the injury during the Champions League Twenty20 in October and was ruled out of the recent one-day series. It is a race against time to get him fit for the opening five-day encounter, with some suggestions that he may struggle to make the starting XI in any capacity or be unable to bowl during the four-match series. However, South Africa coach Mickey Arthur was not ruling out one of his key players and was still holding onto hope that he can play a part with the ball. He echoed Mike Proctor’s view after the convenor of selectors said Kallis was 50-50 to appear at Centurion Park, although Arthur was more positive about Kallis’ prospects as a batsman.”We certainly haven’t ruled him out of bowling during the series and we are still working hard with him ahead of the first Test,” Arthur told Cricinfo. “He has been using an oxygen chamber to try and speed the recovery and is doing extensive rehab every day.”At the moment the best-case scenario is that he bats and bowls at Centurion which is probably 50-50, the next best is that he just bats which is probably around 60-40 and the worst case scenario is that he is only fit for Durban.”Kallis would not be the first player to use oxygen therapy to aid recovery from injury. Simon Jones underwent similar treatment in 2005 when he was trying to be fit for the final Ashes Test although the process was ultimately unsuccessful for him. The benefit of the chambers is that they can supply 100% pure oxygen which helps the body fight injury compared with the normal air which contains only about 20% oxygen.Kallis played in the second Twenty20 international against England before the extent of the rib injury was confirmed. He will be fully assessed when the South African squad meets up in Potchefstroom on Friday for a three-day training camp. “Our priority was the Test series which is why he was pulled from the one-dayers so he didn’t do further damage,” Arthur said. “We will have a far better idea of where we stand on Sunday.”Arthur also confirmed that Dale Steyn was progressing well after his hamstring injury and that the paceman bowled six overs in the nets on Wednesday. Steyn was ruled out of the final two ODIs but now looks set to lead the pace attack alongside Makhaya Ntini, who will reach 100 caps, and probably Morne Morkel.
