A batting collapse from New Zealand women handed West Indies women a four-run victory and a 4-0 whitewash in St Kitts. Set 215 to win, New Zealand were comfortable at 176 for 2 in the 39th over, thanks to an opening stand of 114 between Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest. However, they lost their last eight wickets for just 34 runs and were bundled out for 210, with none of their last six batters contributing more than 7.Offspinner Anisa Mohammed claimed 4 for 41 to wreck New Zealand’s top order, while medium-pacer Shakera Selman chipped in with two late wickets and also effected the run-out of Morna Nielsen to secure the win for West Indies. After being inserted, West Indies had made 214 for 8. Their innings was built on Stafanie Taylor’s 66, and thirties from openers Kycia Knight and Natasha McLean. Regular blows from Georgia Guy and Nielsen (2 for 27) pegged West Indies back to 183 for 8, but Shanel Delay provided a late impetus by striking three fours during an unbeaten 29.

Coughlin enjoy dream day for Durham

Paul Coughlin has enjoyed one heck of a Championship debut. After completing an excellent 85 from No.10 on the second morning, the 21-year-old seamer did exactly what he was picked to do. Take wickets.

ScorecardUsman Khawaja played nicely for 86•Getty ImagesPaul Coughlin has enjoyed one heck of a Championship debut. After completing an excellent 85 from No.10 on the second morning to help Durham score 100 or even 120 more than they should have done, the 21-year-old seamer did exactly what he was picked to do. Take wickets.Lancashire, replying to 338, had eased into an excellent position during the late afternoon at 205 for 2 thanks in the main to Australian overseas debutant Usman Khawaja’s languid 86.But Coughlin changed the course of the match with three wickets in 24 balls either side of tea without conceding a run as Lancashire lost their last eight wickets for 61 to slip into deep trouble, 266 all out with a deficit of 72 that Durham added to in four second innings overs before the close.Coughlin’s burst included the prized wickets of Khawaja and Ashwell Prince, who had shared 111 for the third wicket through the majority of the afternoon, and he finished with 3 for 42. Coughlin bowled a probing line outside off-stump as Khawaja perished to a catch in the gully, Steven Croft to first slip and Prince caught behind for 49.Ben Stokes, who conceded 75 runs in his first eleven overs, then had Tom Smith and Jos Buttler caught behind cheaply to also finish with three wickets. The way he recovered will have been noted by watching England selector James Whitaker.Coughlin and Stokes were matched by Australian John Hastings as Lancashire threw away a golden opportunity to drive the contest.Earlier, Coughlin and Phil Mustard had advanced their overnight partnership from 126 to 150, the highest partnership in Durham’s history for the ninth wicket. His exploits even led to his club side Whitburn of the North East Premier League to tweet: “Got a funny feeling we may not see him for a while.”No matter what Lancashire do, they just can’t seem to excel with the bat. After Khawaja had shared 64 for the second wicket with Alex Davies, he united with Prince for 25.3 overs to leave them on course for a first-innings lead. They should be heading into day three with high hopes of a second victory from nine matches this season. Instead they have their backs to the wall after a hugely damaging collapse in batting conditions much easier than day one.Prior to the clatter of wickets, there were some encouraging signs for Glen Chapple in the form of debutant Khawaja, who hit eleven boundaries in 139 balls having slotted into the team at No. 3. Lancashire fans have been crying out for an overseas batsman for some months now, with the departure of Simon Katich to a coaching role in Australian Rules Football in the winter leaving a sizeable hole.Ironically, Khawaja is close to Katich, who presented him with his New South Wales cap in 1998 and spoke to him about the move to Manchester having previously played for Derbyshire in 2011 and 2012. Unfortunately from Lancashire’s point of view, it was his dismissal which started the collapse.

Warner ton sets up comfortable NSW win

ScorecardDavid Warner’s hundred helped NSW break into the league’s top three•Getty Images

David Warner mimed an upper cut in the direction of the North Sydney Oval press box upon reaching a century that set New South Wales on their way to a commanding defeat of Victoria. If the Sydney newspapers have provided motivation for Warner, it is the nation’s bowlers feeling the greater sting, as a second coruscating hundred in as many matches confirmed the opener’s resolve to keep his place in the Test team, and also to help the Blues triumph in the domestic limited-overs tournament. There had been some regret about Warner’s similarly brazen 139 against Queensland on Thursday, for his dismissal hastened a batting slide and a loss to the Bulls. This time, against a Bushrangers attack including Peter Siddle and John Hastings, Warner’s opening stand of 202 with a measured Peter Nevill put the Blues well and truly on course for a win that the captain, Steven Smith, secured with another innings of composure, maturity and dash. While the composition of the team for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane is still some way from being decided, Warner’s runs and the manner of their making will help convince the selectors of his value. Rod Marsh was on hand to glimpse Warner against Queensland, and on Sunday it was Darren Lehmann who saw his fellow left-hander swatting Siddle to all parts, though perishing to an impudent switch-hit attempt that neither batsman nor coach will want to see repeated.”I’ve always kept backing myself, I’ve used the stuff in the media that the papers always write as a positive for me, it keeps me going,” Warner said of his celebration. “From the get-go, I’ve been feeling good, in the nets I’ve been playing very well, but you can’t get them in the nets, you’ve got to come out and perform.”I just backed myself, played my strokes and it’s good to see the boys all of us gelling together and playing so well. Smithy has got four half-centuries so far and he’s done the job for us. For me, it’s about being still, I’ve done that on both occasions now, trying to be as consistent as I can, hopefully we can come out on Tuesday [against South Australia] and back it up to get another win on the board.”NSW have now secured a place on the competition’s top three alongside the Bushrangers and the Bulls. It remains to be seen who will finish top of the table and thus go straight to the competition decider, avoiding the elimination final between teams two and three. Victoria have lost a little of their earlier momentum, and can do no better than second. Queensland can be tipped out of the top rank by losing to Tasmania on Tuesday, provided the Blues beat the Redbacks by a wide enough margin in a day/night affair at Drummoyne Oval.Sunday’s match followed a pattern familiar to anyone who has watched limited-overs matches at North Sydney over the past 20 years. Victoria were sent in by Smith, who watched Gurinder Sandhu and Josh Hazlewood exploit a little early life in the pitch to have the openers Marcus Stoinis and Rob Quiney offering catches to the cordon with only 29 runs added. It was a passage in sharp contrast to the early progress of the Blues in their chase. From there conditions eased, and a trio of efficient innings by Matthew Wade, Cameron White and David Hussey hurried the Bushrangers to a tally beyond 300. The termination of White’s innings via a skier to Steve O’Keefe on the midwicket boundary was critical, preventing him from continuing on the sharp upward trend of his scoring after a subdued start.Victoria’s total was duly prevented from reaching a mark beyond the range of Warner and Smith on a balmy Sunday afternoon. The hosts wobbled briefly following Warner’s exit, Nevill and Maddinson both out to indeterminate strokes, but Smith sized up the task with typical thoroughness before closing it down with considerable flourish.

A gente vai definir a equipe apenas no vestiário – comentou.

Taufeeq stays positive despite injury

Taufeeq Umar, the Pakistan opener who was forced out of the South Africa tour through injury, does not feel any insecurity over his place

Taufeeq Umar is confident he will regain his Test place when fit•AFP

Taufeeq Umar, the Pakistan opener who was forced out of the South Africa tour through injury, does not feel any insecurity despite conceding his place at the top of the order to Nasir Jamshed.A shin injured curtailed Taufeeq’s tour before the first Test. He had become a settled part of the team following a recall in 2010 after Salman Butt was caught for spot-fixing. In 18 Tests during the second phase of his career he has scored 1214 runs at 37.93 including a career-best 236 against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. For any player forced out by injured there is always the risk that the replacement makes the place his, but Taufeeq is confident he will be able to reclaim his berth.”Injury is always a setback for any player in world cricket,” said Taufeeq. “I was unfortunate to have it at such a wrong time. But I was lucky it was not a serious injury and I am positive about my future. I only require another four weeks to get back in shape. The disappointment is obviously there as I was looking forward to the South Africa tour for a long time as I always enjoy playing against them and score a lot of runs.”Injuries do come but that doesn’t mean that is it. I have been doing well since my comeback in 2010 and have nothing to fear about. The next months obviously are tough but I am ready to put in all the hard work to reclaim my place in the side.”Taufeeq, 31, is Pakistan’s second highest run-scorer against South Africa since his debut with 730 including two hundreds. He also had an impressive tour of the country in 2002-03 when he made 280 runs.”There are certain teams I love to score runs against and South Africa is one of them,” he said. “I need not worry at all about whoever comes in to replace me. It’s in fact a good sign as there is a sense of competition for the slot, which is good for the team. I have good wishes for Nasir or whoever replaces me what is important is that they perform well. I am positive and have nothing to lose, I know I am around and will be available for the next series.”Although Taufeeq should be fit again within a month he will have to wait until June for Pakistan’s next Test assignment when they visit West Indies. He is frustrated by Pakistan’s lack of Tests and admits it will be a challenge for him not to becoming rusty. In the last five years Pakistan have played 35 Tests, with only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe having had fewer.”This is the reason I am bit upset about my injury,” Taufeeq said. “Last time I played a Test was against Sri Lanka some six months back and sometime the gap is more than that so it’s hard for a Test batsman to keep himself in the best shape.”The last domestic season didn’t go well for me. I wasn’t up to the mark but don’t want to make any excuses. I am standing tall and looking forward for positive prospects for my Test career.”

Alice Capsey half-century, two-for sets up South East Stars for vital win over Southern Vipers

Teenager paves way for visitors as Stars leapfrog rivals to go top of Group A

ECB Reporters' Network28-Aug-2021South East Stars 167 for 4 (Capsey 61) beat Southern Vipers 147 for 7 (Elwiss 45, Capsey 2-9) by 20 runsSouth East Stars beat Southern Vipers by 20 runs at the Ageas Bowl in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, thanks to a boisterous half-century and a return of 2 for 9 from 17-year-old Alice Capsey.Capsey’s 61 from 46 balls, combined with useful contributions from Bryony Smith (42 from 25) and Phoebe Franklin (30 from 29), helped the Stars to 167 for 4 – the most runs conceded by Vipers in the competition. Vipers desperately missed strike bowler Lauren Bell, isolating after close contact with a Covid-positive case.In reply Vipers sunk to 32 for 3 in the Powerplay, with both openers caught trying to hit out against Capsey – Georgia Adams at short extra cover and Tara Norris at mid-on.Vipers recovered to reach 147 for 7 thanks to a smart innings from Georgia Elwiss, with 45 from 32 balls, and some late heroics from Alice Monaghan, who hit an unbeaten 30 from 17 balls and tonked the only six of the day over deep midwicket, but their early losses cost them. The win puts Stars at the top of the table with one round to go.Vipers had won the toss and chosen to field but Stars teed off early – Aylish Cranstone punishing Norris’s first over for 15 runs, before the left-armer trapped her lbw. Smith took over where Cranstone left off, hitting the ball hard down the ground as Stars racked up 56 runs in the Powerplay.By contrast Capsey started slowly with 5 from 13, but the dismissal of Smith in the ninth over – caught at long-on, handing debutant Chiara Green her first wicket of the competition – seemed to galvanise her. Two overs later she audaciously scooped Elwiss to the boundary, and followed that up by smashing three boundaries – including a lofted drive down the ground – from Norris’s next over.Capsey shared a 64-run partnership with the fluent Franklin, helped by some uncharacteristically poor fielding in the deep from Vipers. Franklin was bowled by Adams in the 17th but Capsey was unfazed, bringing up a 41-ball half-century with a single in the 19th.She was eventually run out with one ball of the innings to go after a bad fall prevented her making her ground at the non-striker’s end, and limped off clutching her quad. But she came roaring back to open the bowling for Stars to great effect.
