Diego Jarde, poupado, fez falta.

MELHOR, COLORADO CONTROLA O JOGO

Sunderland eye free transfer of ex-Burnley trialist Lewie Earl for Under 23s

Sunderland are being linked with a move to sign Lewie Earl for Elliott Dickman’s Under 23s following the teenage defender’s release by Burnley, as Phil Parkinson’s Black Cats are ravished by injuries.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, the Black Cats are taking a look at Earl’s potential ahead of a possible move to bring the 19-year-old to Wearside following Burnley’s decision to release the young defender from their academy this summer.

Earl featured at centre-half as a member of the Clarets’ junior side in a Premier League 2 clash with Newcastle United earlier this season, but was allowed to leave the club after an evidently unsuccessful trial period.

Burnley were the second side Earl has featured for in 2020 having previously spent time in Preston North End’s academy, but left his boyhood side without a senior appearance to his name.

Earl, the younger brother of Preston defender Josh Earl, made a string of outings for the Lilywhites’ U18s in the FA Youth Cup during his time with the Lancashire outfit and scored one goal, coming in a 3-0 win over Norwich City.

Sunderland’s interest in Earl is thought to be a signing viewed towards the future, rather than as immediate first-team cover, per the Chronicle, following injuries to Morgan Feeney, Jordan Willis and Arbenit Xhemajli.

A modern-day gem

While Burnley opted to release Earl after just one appearance in their Under 23s, the teenage prospect was thought of highly during his time at Preston with LancsLive dubbing the centre-half as one of the Lilywhites’ U18 talents that should get fans excited.

They claimed Earl had every chance of following his brother Josh into senior football as he appears to be a real modern-day centre-half, through his comfortable nature in possession.

Earl is not afraid to get stuck in defensively, either, and could be an ideal free addition for Dickman’s U23s side as Parkinson’s dire defensive situation has gifted the Black Cats the perfect chance to snap up potential future first-team regulars.

Earl will also have a lot of enthusiasm to prove to Preston and Burnley that they were wrong to overlook his potential, and build a successful senior career in years to come.

‘Very exciting’ – Spurs boss praised amid Rodon talks %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown has tipped the club to go for Swansea City defender Joe Rodon as a ‘typical’ signing whilst also lavishing praise on Spurs manager Jose Mourinho.

After a summer of numerous marquee deals, with six new additions in total coming through the door at Hotspur Way, Brown has waxed lyrical over the ‘very exciting’ business being done and has tipped Spurs to bring in a seventh new player before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Rodon still on Spurs’ radar

Rodon, who emerged as a target in the final hours of deadline day, was reportedly ‘close’ to a Tottenham move according to Sky Sports, but journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed they are still in talks.

Football Insider echoed this report, stating Daniel Levy submitted a fresh £13m bid for the 22-year-old earlier this week.

Tottenham have already signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Carlos Vinicius whilst securing the return of club icon Gareth Bale on loan.

According to these recent reports, the 6 foot 4 (1.93m) Swansea powerhouse could be set to join them before the domestic transfer deadline on Friday.

Brown very excited about Rodon

Brown has issued his take on these developments, claiming the Welshman could be a ‘typical’ Lilywhites signing who Mourinho can mould into a world-class asset.

“I think it’s very exciting with all the signings coming in,” the 43-year-old explained to Football Insider.

“I think anybody can be moulded by Jose Mourinho, he’s got that special talent that we’ve seen. He says he’s the special one, as we know.

“He’s a very experienced manager, someone you’d want to play for and it’s a typical sort of Spurs signing, isn’t it?”

Transfer Tavern take

Still only 22, Rodon has already been described as a ‘quiet leader’, with Wales international teammates Bale and Ben Davies reportedly being huge admirers.

A regular for the Swans last term, Rodon has already displayed his consistency at Championship level; and at good value for money (£15m and upwards), he could be a noteworthy signing if Spurs get him.

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic deserves a new deal

Glasgow Rangers must give Borna Barisic a new deal if recent reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Barisic has received praise from former treble-winning Rangers boss Alex McLeish. McLeish admitted that he had doubted him when he first arrived at Ibrox, but believes the “tremendous” defender is now an important part of Steven Gerrard’s side.

He said: “There was talk that he wasn’t quite good enough for the Rangers level, he’d again hit a bit of a patch of bad form and looking a wee bit vulnerable.

“But that’s confidence and you don’t know what a person is like, you’ve never walked in their shoes and it’s difficult to know what he’s feeling in his stomach or what he’s feeling in his head at a certain moment.

“In my days at Aberdeen, I remember losing my form and Sir Alex dropped me and I was humiliated.

“Then I played in a game and I thought I did pretty well but we got battered 3-0 by Dundee United, 3-0 at home. I thought, ‘that’s it, I’ll be dropped again’ but he said to me: ‘That was more like yourself tonight,’ and all of a sudden my mentality came back strong again and my confidence was there.

“They’re only human so I think Barisic has actually exceeded expectations now such is his tremendous form.”

Barisic was part of the back four alongside Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and James Tavernier that prevented Celtic from taking a single shot on target during the first Old Firm derby of the season. It’s now up to Ross Wilson to convince the left-back to sign a new deal after he attracted interest from elite clubs in the summer.

Deserves new deal

Alright, we get it – the Croatia international recently signed a contract extension at the start of the year, whilst his wages have increased to £18,000-per-week, which is more than what club captain James Tavernier currently earns.

Rangers slapped an £8m price tag on his head, although that may not be enough to deter potential suitors if Premier League clubs like Leeds United rear their ugly heads in January. In fact, Leeds were willing to pay £13m to prise Robin Koch away from Freiburg, who now earns £50,000-per-week at Elland Road, which just goes to show the amount of money they are willing to throw at their defence.

However, Gerrard once again insisted the Croatian is not for sale, saying: “We’re not surprised if there is any interest in Borna.

“Of course we’re not because he has been a consistent performer for us for some time now and he has started the season so brightly again.

“But he has signed a long-term deal here, everyone loves him, the fans like him and he was in the running for Player of the Year.”

Even so, the 27-year-old may be unable to resist such a tempting lucrative offer in the future. As we all know, money talks.

Whilst Barisic may not be going anywhere anytime soon at the very least, a hike in wages should be more than enough to fend off any lingering interest from elsewhere in the winter transfer window for the time being.

SofaScore gave him a high grade of 7.4 for his performance at Parkhead – he completed one interception and two clearances, whilst he made one key pass, two crosses, created one big chance, and won three out of six ground duels, as well as five out of seven aerial duels.

He received a rating of 7/10 from Sky Sports, whilst The Daily Record gave him the same score, claiming he “was able to match the attacking runs of Frimpong down his side with good positional sense and one brilliant ball almost volleyed home by Kent.”

If the Gers are to regain their title, we suspect that he may have a part to play bombing up and down the flanks. That’s if he stays until the end of the season, of course.

Celtic suffer another blow as Hatem Elhamed is ruled out for Old Firm clash

Celtic have suffered another cruel blow ahead of this weekend’s top-of-the-table Old Firm clash at Parkhead.

Hoops centre-back Hatem Abd Elhamed has been ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19 and will now be forced to self-isolate for the next two weeks.

The Israeli defender reported feeling unwell after playing in their 2-1 defeat against the Czech Republic on Sunday afternoon, just three days after he played against Scotland in a Euro 2020 qualifier, in which they lost on penalties.

Both Bhoys midfielder Callum McGregor and Gers maestro Ryan Jack started for Steve Clarke’s Tartan Army too. They then went onto beat Slovakia 1-0 thanks to a resolute showing from Declan Gallagher on Sunday.

Elhamed joins fellow international teammate Nir Bitton in missing the crucial derby match, adding to Neil Lennon’s nightmare as star playmaker Ryan Christie is also out too.

Even though he hasn’t tested positive for the virus, he has to self-isolate due to his close contact with former Celtic star Stuart Armstrong.

It doesn’t end there though as there will be serious doubts over leading talisman Odsonne Edouard, who will return to training just one day before the match, putting his fitness and wellbeing into question.

That is a total of four first-team players that Lennon could be without as they face Rangers, who sit above them in the table on Saturday.

Elhamed and Bitton are two defensive options, meaning he could be forced into starting Christopher Jullien, which may be a gamble seeing as he’s only just returned from injury.

Likewise in the attack, it’ll have to be Albian Ajeti, who has also been on the treatment table recently, paired with a rarely-seen Leigh Griffiths or a winger like Moi Elyounoussi playing out of position once again.

This is far from ideal when the Hoops are playing chase in the title race already, such injuries and set-backs could well put their unbeaten start in jeopardy – all against their only true challenger too.

Lennon will be glad to see the back of this international break, that’s for sure.

AND in other news, Celtic can’t repeat their Stuart Armstrong-like mistake with £10m STAR…

Arsenal: Emiliano Martinez might be offered new deal after impressing Mikel Arteta

Arsenal fans would have been worried as they saw goalkeeper Bernd Leno get carried off against Brighton in the first week of football returning.

It meant that Emiliano Martinez had to come in, but he seems to have impressed as there are rumours of him staying at the club for longer than planned.

According to The Mirror, the performances of the Argentinian have changed the Gunners plans for the upcoming transfer window as they wanted buy a new keeper in the summer; FC Barcelona goalkeeper Neto had been linked.

Martinez was considering his future because he wanted to play more games, but now Arsenal are willing to give him a better role at the club where instead of him being just a reserve goalkeeper, he will now be seen as a possible number one and can challenge Leno for his spot when he returns. The club have been so impressed that he might even be rewarded with a new deal.

Before Leno’s injury, the 27 year-old had only made six appearances in the Premier League, despite the fact that he has been at the club for ten years, per Transfermarkt.

This shows that he has been happy with the reserve role, and even though he has been loaned out during his Arsenal career, it shows that he has always wanted to try and fight for that number one spot at the Emirates. The fact that he is now getting a chance in the first team is something that supporters will like to see.

They will also love the fact that his performances have been pretty good as he has only conceded three goals in the five league games he has played in this campaign and has also kept three clean sheets, per Transfermarkt.

It seems only right that due to these performances, the Gunners should try to keep hold of him and it is good for all parties if he does stay beyond the transfer window. With the side aiming for Europe, they could have a lot of fixtures next year and Mikel Arteta will love the fact that he has two good goalkeepers if he did want to rotate them.

Manchester United: Fans ecstatic as Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan consider signing Chris Smalling

Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan have entered the race to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling this summer, reports say.

The 30-year-old defender has spent the past season on loan with AS Roma and impressed Paulo Foncesca during his time at the Stadio Olimpico.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as per @utdreport, Inter are considering signing Smalling in the summer, which would make him the fourth Man United player in 12 months to swap Old Trafford for the San Siro (Daily Mail).

Roma are ready to renew their efforts to sign the United outcast, despite the fact the Serie A side are strapped for cash.

The Red Devils are reportedly demanding £23m for the 31-cap England international, who has fallen out of favour with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Smalling made 28 appearances in the Italian top flight last term, scoring two goals, supplying two assists, completing two interceptions and over four clearances per game (via WhoScored). However, Solskjaer deems him surplus to requirements, and he will be allowed to leave Old Trafford if the right offer arrives in the summer.

Unsurprisingly, lots of United fans gushed over the news surrounding the “deadwood” on social media, with some supporters praising Conte (formerly of Chelsea) for his efforts to try and sign the veteran. One fan urged the board to “erect a statue” while another added “Mourinho in the mud” in reference to the fact the Italian has signed several players who were unwanted by the former boss.
