Revealed: Why Cristiano Ronaldo will be allowed to play at 2026 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo’s three-match ban for sustaining a red card in Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against Ireland has been suspended for a year, and the reason why has now been revealed.

Why Ronaldo will be allowed to play at 2026 World Cup

Ronaldo was shown a straight red card for violent conduct in his side’s 2-0 defeat against Ireland this month, having elbowed Dara O’Shea, but he is set to be involved from the start of the World Cup next summer.

FIFA have taken the decision to suspend the final two games of the ban, and with the forward sitting out of his side’s 9-1 drubbing of Armenia, he will be able to take part in all of Portugal’s group games.

The decision has caused plenty of controversy, with talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein calling it “disgusting”, given that the same rules haven’t been applied to Nicolas Otamendi and Moises Caicedo, who both have one-match bans, meaning they are set to miss the first World Cup game.

Darren Bent also weighed in, saying the only reason FIFA have decided to make an exception is because the Portugal star sells tickets, but the BBC have now revealed that another factor is at play.

According to their sources, FIFA have taken into account that it was the 40-year-old’s first red card in 226 international appearances when making their decision.

The statement put out by the governing body is also relayed, which states: “If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension set out in the disciplinary decision shall be deemed automatically revoked and the remaining two matches must be served immediately.”

How far ahead Ronaldo is of Messi in race to 1,000 goals

The Al-Nassr star has made it clear he wants to reach 1,000 goals before he hangs up his boots.

ByDominic Lund Nov 4, 2025 Ronaldo has one last chance at World Cup glory

In truth, the decision is definitely questionable, given that similar exceptions haven’t been made for Otamendi and Caicedo, and journalist Colin Millar has drawn comparisons to Inter Miami being allowed to play at the Club World Cup.

However, Ronaldo will undoubtedly be relieved, given that he has already confirmed the 2026 World Cup will be his last, saying: “Definitely, yes. I will be 41 years old and I think [this] will be the moment in the big competition.”

Should the Al-Nassr star win the competition with Portugal, there is a case to be made for him winning the ‘GOAT’ debate, but it will be a tall order, with the likes of Spain, England, France and Argentina all looking strong.

Joelinton upgrade: PIF pursuing £44m Newcastle move for "one-man army"

Eddie Howe hasn’t minced his words when quizzed on Newcastle United’s interest in their former schoolboy Elliot Anderson, who was sold to Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest for about £35m in 2024.

Now regarded as “one of the best midfielders in the Premier League” by Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel, Anderson is indeed becoming a star, and Newcastle want him back, forced into cashing in to comply with PSR regulations.

But Manchester United are also known suitors, and Forest are set to demand in excess of £100m for their prized player.

Newcastle need a centre-midfielder, though, and technical director Ross Wilson is centring on a shrewd alternative.

Newcastle pursuing new midfielder

Though Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali are among the finest midfielders in the game, Joelinton is becoming a weak link, with Toon writer Thomas Hammond claiming this is “the start of the end” for the Brazilian.

The 29-year-old surely doesn’t have much more mileage left in the tank, having run many laps around the St. James’ Park grass across the years.

The interest in Anderson is suggestive of Howe’s stance on the mainstay’s future, but there is an alternative option in the pipeline for the PIF-backed side.

Indeed, Italian outlet Tuttomercato, Newcastle are pursuing a January move for Roma midfielder Manu Kone, who has been instrumental in the club’s blooming Serie A title charge this term.

Reports from the summer claim that the Italians have placed a €50m (£44m) price tag on the 24-year-old, but United and PIF would surely strike gold, should they bring him over.

What Manu Kone would bring to Newcastle

Kone has been at Roma since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, joining the club from Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany. He was a loanee last season but has since become a permanent member of Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad.

A powerhouse of a midfielder, the 6 foot 1 Frenchman is limber but endowed with natural strength that allows him to perform robustly in the engine room.

As well as being a crisp passer, Kone is also skilled as a carrier, looking to break lines.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 2% of Serie A midfielders this season for pass completion and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90. He regularly draws fouls from lunging opponents.

That aside, Kone has also been hailed as a “one-man army” in midfield by talent scout Jacek Kulig, owing to that strength and physicality in the middle of the park.

In this, he could be the perfect player to succeed Joelinton in Howe’s midfield, striking a balance between the different facets of a successful box-to-box role.

Joelinton has had a good run in Howe’s midfield, but it’s time for ruthlessness to take precedence: the club have threatened to stagnate this term, and a breath of fresh air in the engine room could elevate the squad, reinforcing the backline and giving new support to the forwards.

His ball-carrying metrics have decreased significantly, and while he remains a combative and dangerous force in the middle, there’s no question that the Brazil international lacks the same full-throttle energy as once before.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone.

Kone was considered a top talent during his early-career days in the German Bundesliga, and while he has endured some ebb-tide moments in his career, no one can deny that he is now blooming into a complete midfielder tailor-made for the Premier League.

Yankees Star Giancarlo Stanton in Danger of Missing Opening Day

New York Yankees star slugger Giancarlo Stanton could miss Opening Day due to tendinitis in both of his elbows, he told reporters at spring training on Monday morning.

"Tennis elbow or however they call it is tears in tendon, so it's not when did it feel good, when did it feel bad. There's always a pain level there, and you got to deal with that. So yeah, it's just the wisest point to give time right now," Stanton said.

Stanton has not swung a bat in three or four weeks. He says he feels like he's falling behind in regard to being ready for the opener on March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

"Definitely behind, but I mean that's just a matter of being ready for a full go today as opposed to in a little bit," he said. "So we have five, six weeks here. It'll be a good ramp-up from there. We'll see how it goes."

The 35-year-old Stanton's health will be extremely important for the middle of the Yankees lineup if the franchise plans to repeat as American League champions in 2025.

Stanton hit .233 last season with 27 home runs and 72 RBI.

Alessia Russo, Aitana Bonmati, Mary Earps among nominees for 2025 FIFPRO Women's World 11, as 11 Lionesses named on shortlist – but no USWNT representation

Alessia Russo is one of 11 Lionesses on the list of nominees for this year's FIFPRO Women's World 11 which also includes seven players from the Spain side England beat in the European Championship final – but not Mariona Caldentey, who put La Roja ahead in that game and finished as runner-up to Aitana Bonmati at the Ballon d'Or.

  • FIFPRO Women's World 11 shortlist revealed

FIFPRO revealed the 26-player shortlist on Monday, a week before the unveiling of the final team on Nov. 3, and it is no shock that representatives from the England, Brazil and Nigeria sides that all enjoyed continental triumphs this past summer made the cut. Russo is one of nine players to be nominated after winning Euro 2025, with there also room for the recently retired Lionesses pair of Earps and Millie Bright.

Marta is the sole member of Brazil's Copa America side on the list, though she is joined by compatriot Debinha, while Michelle Alozie flies the flag for Nigeria, winners of this year's Africa Cup of Nations.

There are some surprise omissions, though, with Caldentey certainly the most notable. The 29-year-old was outstanding for Arsenal last season, helping them to win an unprecedented Champions League title while collecting the Women's Super League Player of the Year and the PFA Player of the Year awards, the latter voted for by her peers. However, despite continuing her good form at Euro 2025 and scoring in the final, she has not made this list.

Rasheedat Ajibade, Player of the Tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations, and Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Golden Glove winner, are other shock absentees after helping Nigeria triumph on the continent, with the inclusion of just one member of Brazil's Copa America team also a real surprise.

Claudia Pina and Caroline Graham Hansen, both outstanding for treble-winning Barcelona this past year, are other names that many would've expected to see shortlisted, as is that of Temwa Chawinga, the NWSL Player of the Year for 2024.

  • How the FIFPRO World 11 shortlist is produced

FIFPRO's World 11 is voted for by professional footballers from all around the globe, with a digital voting form asking players to pick three names who they believe were the most outstanding goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards based on performances from Aug. 11, 2024, to Aug. 3, 2025.

Players must have played in at least 20 official matches during that time period in order to be eligible, meaning stars like Lauren James, Vivianne Miedema and Naomi Girma could not receive votes for the 2025 FIFPRO World 11.

All three players had high points last season, with Miedema scoring some big goals for new club Man City, James helping England to win Euro 2025 and Girma playing her part in Chelsea's treble-winning campaign after signing for the Blues for a record-breaking fee back in January. However, injuries limited the trio from hitting the 20-game mark in the period in question.

Du Plessis, Ferreira and Hosein script thumping Super Kings win

Texas Super Kings’ (TSK) South Africans came to the fore as they thumped MI New York (MINY) by 39 runs to qualify for the knockout stage of MLC 2025. Faf du Plessis led the charge with his second century of the season and Donovan Ferreira provided the firepower at the back end of the innings with a 20-ball 53 to take TSK to 223 for 4. Akeal Hosein then starred with the ball to restrict MINY to 184 for 9 as TSK stayed within two points of the top two teams, with Kieron Pollard’s 39-ball 70 going in vain.TSK did not get off to a good start as George Linde trapped Smit Patel in front with just three runs on the board. But in the third over, du Plessis hammered 16 runs off Ehsan Adil, including back-to-back sixes.Du Plessis racked up two sixes each off the next two overs, bowled by Linde and Boult, before Rushil Ugarkar closed out the powerplay with a relatively quiet seven-run sixth over, even as du Plessis brought up a 21-ball half-century.MINY ramped up the pressure, conceding just one boundary from the next four overs, a period that also saw Saiteja Mukkamalla hole out at deep midwicket off Linde.Akeal Hosein’s 3 for 15 at the top derailed the MI New York chase•Sportzpics for MLC

Du Plessis – who scored 11 runs off 12 balls after reaching his fifty – helped swing the momentum, with two more sixes off Linde’s final over. Marcus Stoinis then fell to Ugarkar as MINY looked to slow TSK down, but du Plessis and Ferreira had other ideas.Du Plessis pulled Pollard for a six over midwicket before Ferreira drove him for a couple of fours. Du Plessis then picked up a boundary off Boult to set up a thrilling last three overs that saw TSK rack up 56 runs.Ferreira tore into Adil for 20 runs off the 18th over before du Plessis reached his century with a swivel-pull off Boult, even as the penultimate over only cost eight runs. He began the final over with two sixes before Ugarkar equalled Shardul Thakur’s unwanted record of most consecutive wides in a T20, bowling five on the trot. The third legal delivery of the over also went for six as Ferreira brought up the joint-fastest fifty in MLC history.Kieron Pollard gives the ball a good, old-fashioned thump•Sportzpics for MLC

MINY had a tentative start to the chase and soon Nandre Burger picked up the big early wicket of Nicholas Pooran, who opened the innings. Hosein then bowled a wicket-maiden in the powerplay to put MINY under further pressure. He then dismissed de Kock and Tajinder Singh in consecutive overs to complete a masterful spell and leave MINY on 75 for 4 in the 11th over. The late assault from Pollard came a little too late, even as he thrashed Noor Ahmad for three consecutive sixes in the 14th over, followed by a boundary thanks to Mukkamalla letting the ball slip out of his hands and over the rope after he collected it at long-off and was trying to throw it back to the middle. The next three overs brought 37 runs, but a brilliant effort from Ferreira at long-off broke the 88-run stand.By the time Burger cleaned up Pollard in the penultimate over, the chase was already out of MINY’s hands.

Dhoni on CSK's collapse against SRH: 'Not a justifiable score'

CSK suffered their first-ever loss against SRH at Chepauk, and their seventh defeat in nine games this season

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Apr-20251:47

Finch: CSK needed a player like Brevis in middle order

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni felt his side had been “short by 15-20 runs” after they were bowled out for 154 on their way to a five-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday. It was CSK’s seventh defeat in nine games in IPL 2025, and their first-ever home defeat to SRH.CSK were at one stage poised for a better total, but lost their last six wickets for 40 runs after they were 114 for 4 in the 13th over.”I think we kept losing wickets and another thing is I felt, in the first innings, the wicket was slightly better, and 155 [154] is not a justifiable score because it wasn’t turning a lot,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation. “Yes, after the eighth, ninth, [or] tenth over, it became slightly two-paced when it comes to the fast bowlers. But nothing that was out of the ordinary. So I feel we could have run slightly better and put a few more runs on the board.”Yes, [in the] second innings, there was a bit of help. Our spinners, the quality is there. So they were bowling in the right areas, and they got a bit of bounce. It was stopping a bit, but yeah, we were short by 15-20 runs.”MS Dhoni’s men succumbed to their seventh loss in nine games this season•Associated PressAmid the batting collapse, one positive for CSK was the performance of the 21-year-old Dewald Brevis. Playing his first game of the season after being picked as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, Brevis walked out to bat at 47 for 3 in the final over of the powerplay. He went on to top-score for CSK on Friday, smashing four sixes in his 42 from 25 balls.Three of Brevis’ four sixes came in one over off spinner Kamindu Mendis. While praising Brevis, Dhoni pointed out that CSK otherwise needed to improve against that type of bowling.”I think he batted really well, and we need something like that in the middle order,” Dhoni said of Brevis. “Where we have slightly struggled is when the spinners come in, that’s the time we need to either do it by batsmanship – pick up your areas where you’re scoring – or try to play the big shot once in your area. So, I feel that’s where we have been lacking.”We have not been able to dominate or get runs against the spinners at a good pace in the middle. So that’s one area where we want to improve because middle overs are very crucial – you have to get those extra five, ten or 15 runs, especially if you get off to a good start.”The loss against SRH has kept CSK at the bottom of the table, with just four points from nine games. CSK have lost four out of their five home games so far this season, and their next match is also at Chepauk. They host Punjab Kings on April 30, having lost to them by 18 runs earlier in the season in Mullanpur.

Dele 2.0: Spurs must offload "incredible" Levy signing alongside Bissouma

Dele Alli was seen as a youngster with huge potential at Tottenham Hotspur, but despite his early success at the club, he struggled to maintain his top-level performances.

The Englishman joined the Lilywhites in a £5m deal from MK Dons back in the summer of 2015, taking the Premier League by storm in his first couple of seasons.

He scored 37 times in his first three years in North London, registering a further 26 assists – helping him win the PFA Young Player of the Year award two years in a row.

However, it would all come crashing down for the midfielder, subsequently dropping down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, with off-field issues rearing their head and leading to his demise.

Fast-forward to 2025, manager Thomas Frank has another talented player in the same situation, which could lead to his own exit from the club in the near future.

The latest on Yves Bissouma’s Tottenham future

Despite being a regular in Ange Postecoglou’s plans, making 44 appearances in all competitions, midfielder Yves Bissouma looks set to be sold by Spurs in the coming weeks.

The Malian international, who cost £35m from Brighton in the summer of 2022, has ultimately failed to impress new boss, Frank, but mainly due to his off-the-field issues rather than on-field performances.

He was left out of the Super Cup clash with PSG due to disciplinary reasons and has failed to be a part of any squad since then, not even making the bench for the Lilywhites.

It’s not the first time the 29-year-old has been involved in off-the-field antics, being spotted inhaling nitrous oxide – leading to a suspension from the hierarchy.

However, he looks set to be sold to Turkey in the coming days, with Fenerbahce interested in his signature, but he should also be joined by another player out of the exit door.

The Spurs player who should be axed alongside Bissouma

Whilst this summer was mainly about incomings at Spurs, decisions have been made to offload players to create wriggle room for Frank to work with after taking the reins.

The Dane splashed upwards of £100m on the signatures of Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus – adding needed quality into the club’s forward line for 2025/26 and beyond.

Such moves have added to the likes of Brennan Johnson and Richarlison, with the pair already opening their account for the new campaign under Frank.

However, despite joining on a permanent basis this summer, attacker Mathys Tel could find himself on the periphery after the latest development in North London.

The Frenchman joined the Lilywhites in a £30m deal from Bayern Munich, re-joining the club after spending the second half of the previous campaign on loan with Spurs.

At just 20, he has bags of time to fulfill his potential, but it’s unclear whether he will be able to achieve his goal under Frank after the new emerging from the club this week.

Tel, who’s been labelled “incredible” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, was left out of the Lilywhites’ Champions League squad for the 2025/26 campaign – casting doubt over his long-term future.

Such a situation is similar to that of Dele, subsequently being alienated from the first-team squad, which could see the player move closer to the exit door.

However, such a scenario could eventually see the club lose Tel for a minimal fee, just like they did with Dele a couple of years ago – needing to cash in on his services if he currently isn’t in Frank’s plans.

The decision to leave the youngster out may prove to be an unpopular one with the fanbase, especially after the hierarchy forked out £30m for his signature a matter of months ago.

The player himself would also undoubtedly be angry with the latest development, with the board needing to fund a move away from the club for Tel alongside Bissouma to allow them to kick on their development elsewhere.

Spurs tried to sign £43m star after Kolo-Muani, he was Frank's top target

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank identified a “superstar” as a priority target after Randal Kolo-Muani, with a late approach being made on deadline day.

Spurs tried to sign another forward after Kolo-Muani

In one of the surprise moves of deadline day, Spurs got Kolo-Muani through the door, with the Frenchman joining on a straight loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain.

Frank has since explained why he decided to bring in the PSG forward, who has predominantly featured at striker throughout his career to date, rather than signing a new winger.

The Tottenham manager said: “He’s a good age, in the prime of his career, has good qualities that will suit both us and the Premier League,”

“He gives us a different option in the final third, being able to play out wide and through the middle. Randal is a quality player who has proven himself over a number of years, playing for big teams in the Champions League and also with good experience for the France national team.”

However, while Frank was clearly delighted to get Kolo-Muani through the door, the Dane identified another forward as a priority target in the final hours of the transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur managerThomasFrankcelebrates after the match

That is according to a report from GiveMeSport, which states the manager was eyeing Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman as his top target, but Tottenham were ultimately unable to come to an agreement with the Italian club.

It is revealed that Spurs wanted to sign Lookman on a straight loan, rather than forking out the £43m it would’ve taken to get a deal over the line, meaning they have now missed out on his signature.

With the forward’s proposed move to Bayern Munich also falling through, he could be set to remain at Atalanta until January, at which point the Lilywhites may have the opportunity to make another approach, given that he is well-known to have fallen out with his club.

"Superstar" Lookman could've been quality signing for Spurs

Tottenham were clearly reluctant to splash the cash on deadline day, having also signed Kolo Muani on a straight loan deal, which includes no option or obligation to buy, and they may have missed out on a top player.

Sold for £6.7m: Spurs must regret selling star who's outscoring Kolo Muani

After Tottenham signed Randal Kolo Muani on deadline day for a €5m loan fee, should Spurs regret selling a striker who has outscored the Frenchman?

1 ByBen Gray Sep 2, 2025

Lauded as a “superstar” by 90min’s Sean Walsh, the 27-year-old has taken his career to new heights since arriving in the Serie A, picking up a very impressive 52 goals and 25 assists in 118 appearances for the Italian club.

As such, the Nigeria international may now be ready to test himself in the Premier League once again, despite not setting the world alight during previous stints with Fulham, Leicester City and Everton.
