Liverpool: Fans fume at James Pearce’s Neco Williams update

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after James Pearce claimed Neco Williams won’t be replaced this summer, if he leaves the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side managed to salvage their 2020/21 season, finishing third in the Premier League, despite so much going wrong throughout the campaign.

The hope is that it was nothing more than a blip, however, with Liverpool going into next season as title challengers again.

Klopp could need more depth at his disposal this time around in order to compete with Manchester City, but one player who could leave Anfield is Williams.

Writing in The Athletic, Pearce claimed that the Welshman could move on this summer in search of regular first-team football if a £10million bid arrives.

He also states that a replacement right-back wouldn’t be signed, however, with Joe Gomez and youngster Conor Bradley seen as options there.

Aston Villa eyeing Burnley’s Dwight McNeil

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has confirmed that Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Burnley winger Dwight McNeil this summer.

What’s the story?

A report from Football Insider previously claimed that Dean Smith’s side have their eye on the Clarets talent, with the 21-year-old “one of the top targets of their recruitment team” and the Premier League club “lining up a huge bid for him”.

Evans has now said: “Villa already recognise the need for another wide player, and The Athletic understands Burnley’s Dwight McNeil is of serious interest, as is Emi Buendia of Championship winners Norwich. Extensive groundwork has already been done on both of them.

“The scouting department has closely scrutinised his in-game contributions, and McNeil is recognised as a player who brings additional options to open up a game.

“Ideally, Burnley do not wish to part with any of their top performers and are under no pressure to sell, but every player at the club has their price — though McNeil will not come cheap. He’s contracted to the club for another three years, with an option to extend that by a further year. It is also understood that at least three other clubs are interested in him, besides Villa.”

Imagine him and Grealish

With his ability to beat players one-on-one – his average of 1.8 dribbles per game in the Premier League is the highest of any Burnley player and double that of Charlie Taylor in second – McNeil could create an exciting tandem with Jack Grealish.

The £50m-rated winger has arguably been one of the few standout performers going forward for the Clarets, and it’s something which has led to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp raving about him.

He said: “Dwight McNeil is such a good player, lovely left foot, doesn’t stop running. Every time I watch him he gets better and better, he’s got real quality and certainly a player that the top six to eight clubs will be looking at, and that’s no disrespect to Burnley because I don’t like saying that sometimes, but he is that good.”

McNeil’s composure on the ball, something very much akin to Grealish, has led to Burnley manager Sean Dyche hailing the composure that he has when he gets into the final third of the pitch.

He said: “He’s a real talent. He’s a really good player, he’s improving, his calmness at the end – I’m saying get it in the corner – but he cuts in, and his calmness to cross it into a dangerous area, and then gets his reward.

“Before then, his calmness to dribble out of trouble – he’s a really good player, really good, and he can only mature.”

There are a lot of similarities between the way McNeil and Grealish play, and a move for the Burnley winger could help to build a supremely entertaining attacking duo at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has dropped a major Aston Villa transfer update…

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Patrick Vieira news

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to an update regarding Patrick Vieira on social media.

Palace are on the hunt for a new manager following Roy Hodgson’s Selhurst Park exit at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Former Arsenal midfielder Vieira was reportedly placed on the Eagles’ shortlist as a possible replacement for Hodgson back in April.

However, it appears as if Palace could miss out on the 44-year-old, who was sacked by Nice in December.

Vieira’s agent told Il Secolo XIX that the Frenchman is in contention to take over at Serie A side Sampdoria, with a meeting in place.

Nuno Espirito Santo now appears to be Palace’s man, though, with the former Wolves man in advanced talks with the Eagles, who appear to have made him their number one target.

Some reports have however claimed that swoop could be off too.

Pundit backs Liverpool to join war for Kane

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he would be surprised not to see Liverpool enter the race for Tottenham forward Harry Kane.

Kane has reportedly told Tottenham that he wants to leave the club in the summer and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City and Manchester United.

According to Sky Sports, the Champions League and Europa League finalists, as well as Chelsea, have already been in contact with Kane’s representatives over a potential transfer.

And Hendrie believes Liverpool are another outfit who could soon enter the fray to sign the England captain this summer.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about Kane’s future, the Sky Sports pundit said:

“I don’t think it’s down to money for Harry Kane. I think it’s now down to winning trophies at that age and that’s why I feel if he’s available, I’d be very surprised if Manchester City and Manchester United, Liverpool aren’t having a tug of war over Harry Kane.

“When you’re so prolific in that area, I just don’t see how he wouldn’t fit the bill for any of the top three, top four football clubs.”

After the season they have had, easily surrendering their title to Manchester City, Liverpool could probably do with a signing like Kane.

With a £150m price tag floating about, though, it will obviously not be easy to get him out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

West Ham urged to sign Abraham over Giroud

West Ham must pick Tammy Abraham over Olivier Giroud if they do business with Chelsea this summer, says former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Both strikers, 23 and 34, are currently being linked with a move to the London Stadium after being left out in the cold by Thomas Tuchel this season.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are ready to offer Abraham in any potential deal for Declan Rice. Meanwhile, Calciomercato.it (via Hammers News) claims West Ham could make a swoop for Giroud, who will be a free agent in the upcoming transfer window.

For Palmer, if it is a toss-up between the two, then Abraham is a no-brainer. The ex-Leeds United midfielder told TT in an exclusive interview:

“In terms of taking the club forward, you’d rather get Tammy Abraham, wouldn’t you? Young player who needs to leave Chelsea. If he’s not going to play, he needs to leave, he needs to leave.

“Of course, you’d always have somebody like Giroud in your squad and around your squad, but the future is the likes of Abraham. Even if they get him out on a season loan, Abraham’s the one they need to get.”

Even though he has not played regularly, Giroud has still shown his worth this season, scoring those four goals against Sevilla in the Champions League, for example.

Given the age factor, however, Abraham quite clearly one for now and the future, going for the England international instead might make a little more sense.

Maguire discusses Gers finances

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed Glasgow Rangers have missed out on around £36m in matchday revenue across this season.

Maguire discusses Rangers issue

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Gers have been unable to welcome supporters to Ibrox throughout the whole of this campaign.

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire has revealed the financial loss and believes the Scottish government must shed light on when fans can return. He said:

“I think Rangers fans will renew because Steven Gerrard has delivered for them.

“When the club will legitimately be allowed to claim that money is so complex a problem.

“Clearly, they’ll have to roll over season tickets, which I think will be an issue.

“Scotland as a country has the highest proportion in Uefa of matchday income compared to total income.

“When we look at Rangers, 60 per cent of its total income in 2020 came from matchday. So it is a dominant force.

“Matchday income for 2020 was just under £36m out of total revenues of £59m, and that was a season that was curtailed by Covid.

“Potentially next season if they reach the group stages of the Champions League, the broadcasting pot will rise significantly.

“But matchday income is essential for Rangers. They’ve got a completely devoted fanbase who will turn up regardless of the opposition.”

Deficit

Unfortunately, the last year has had a negative impact on clubs across the world. The Gers may be big enough to survive even without such a source of income, but £36m is a huge amount of money to miss out on. Hopefully, they can reach the group stages of the Champions League to offset that loss.

So far, it remains unclear as to when supporters will be once again allowed to attend matches in the Premiership – this is something that must be determined as soon as possible, at the very least so clubs can plan ahead. 12,000 fans are set to attend European Championships games at Hampden Park this summer, which perhaps gives an indication of what is come. Conversation, though, is needed at club level as well.

AVFC: Fans react to Chukwuemeka hat-trick

A number of Aston Villa supporters have been heaping praise on teenage midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka following his impressive FA Youth Cup display on Tuesday evening.

The 17-year-old, who signed a professional deal at Villa Park back in October, scored three times in the club’s 6-1 win over Newcastle United.

Chukwuemeka netted his second and third goals in the space of three minutes in the second half to ensure Villa would advance to the semi-finals, where they will face local rivals West Brom.

The Englishman, capable of playing as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder, was the star of the show at St James’ Park, and his performance caught the eyes of hundreds of Villa supporters on social media.

Villa fans react

The club kept fans up to date during the quarter-final on their official Twitter page.

As to be expected, the news of Chukwuemeka’s hat-trick had a number of supporters talking, with one labelling the youngster’s potential as ‘insane’.

Aston Villa: Fans slam Grealish update

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have hit out at the club’s official Twitter post regarding Jack Grealish.

Villa shared Dean Smith’s comments ahead of Saturday’s trip to Liverpool, with the manager confirming Grealish has now suffered a ‘setback that will probably put him back a couple of weeks’.

The 25-year-old has missed the club’s last seven games with a shin injury, and it seems as if he’ll be missing at least a few more following this latest update.

Villa have struggled without the attacking midfielder, picking up eight points from a possible 21 without their talisman.

Grealish also missed out representing the Three Lions during the recent international break, and this latest setback may impact his chances of going to this summer’s European Championships.

Villa fans react

Villa shared Smith’s comments on Grealish on Friday morning and it didn’t take long for hundreds of supporters to have their say.

WHU: Fans react to Burt’s GSB claim

Many fans of West Ham United have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed Jason Burt’s report regarding David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady.

According to Burt’s report for The Telegraph, the club’s owners will “deserve credit” if West Ham go on to secure Champions League qualification via a top four Premier League finish this season.

Burt went on to reference Gold’s claim back in 2016 when, upon moving to the London Stadium, the 84-year-old stated: “There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t be playing in the Champions League in the next five years.”

However, in reaction to The Telegraph sharing the report on Twitter, numerous fans of West Ham flocked to have their say on the matter. Many appeared to strongly disagree with Burt’s opinion, stating their belief that the only reason the club are in such a good position in the league is because of the management of David Moyes and his players’ performances, and that the Irons have been successful despite GSB’s running of the club, not because of it.

So, what exactly did these West Ham United fans have to say in reaction to Jason Burt’s report?

“If West Ham qualify for Europe, it will be DESPITE the owners’ amateurish football operation.”

@AndyPlaytonic

“Give them credit? Oh behave, Jason. Let’s wait for the summer and Moyes needs a £30m striker and is told he only has £5m and has to sell to buy to get anyone else in. It’s what they do best. #GSBOUT.”

@darrell210474

Celtic: Wilder must top wishlist after twist emerges

The hunt for Celtic’s new manager has been sprinkled with some extra spice over the last week or so. The Hoops hierarchy are still no closer to announcing Neil Lennon’s successor but they are discovering more about their options.

It has now been three weeks since Lennon left his post and the Bhoys are busy chipping away at their list.

Early speculation claimed it could be Rafa Benitez who takes on the job but the search for the Northern Irishman’s successor has taken many twists and turns since.

Last week, RB Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch revealed it was an honour to be linked with the hot seat. However, just a day later, German reporter Christian Falk said the following: “He will not be available in the summer for the job in Glasgow.”

Considering all he’s brought to Salzburg, this was a monumental blow to Celtic’s hopes.

What this twist has allowed, though, is for Celtic to get their priorities straight. One of the names linked in recent weeks has been Chris Wilder.

The 53-year-old left his role as manager of Sheffield United with the Blades sat rock bottom of the English Premier League. That may not bring much joy to Hoops supporters but his achievements prior to that are incredible.

Martin Keown described Wilder as the “messiah” of Bramall Lane, taking them from League One to the Premier League and nearly achieving a miracle in earning them European football.

Sheffield United ultimately finished ninth in the table last term, just two points behind Arsenal. This season may be one to forget but for everything he achieved previously, he must be top of Celtic’s wishlist.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-boupendza-mcgeady-marsch-mccarthy” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Wilder worked on a shoestring budget and importantly for the Hoops, he is pretty adept defensively.

The Blades conceded just 39 goals last term, fewer than Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City. For a Celtic side who have been so lacklustre in that part of their game this term, he could be game-changing.

The Glaswegians have shipped 14 more goals than Rangers in the league while they somehow let in 19 strikes during their six Europa League group games.

If there is any area they need to desperately improve in ahead of next season, it’s at the back.

Combine Wilder’s ability to work with minimal funds and achieve things above his station and it makes for an eye-catching appointment.

The likes of Roberto Martinez and Ralf Rangnick might be more appealing, but Wilder stands as the more realistic option.
