Should Premier League clubs take a punt on Liverpool ace?

As if Luis Suarez hadn’t already made himself an easy target for the British media, the Liverpool forward has now made matters worse for himself, at least in the short-term, by declaring he wants to leave the Premier League due to the intense criticism he receives on the part of the press.

Of course, it is certainly a case of ‘no smoke without fire’ with a string of incidents and constant controversy triggering such a widespread adverse reaction to the Uraguayan’s behaviour, but regardless, Suarez has now become one of the summer’s most hotly desired purchases in Europe, along with Robert Lewandowski and Edinson Cavani.

[cat_link cat=”liverpool” type=”tower”]

In addition to the tabloids making Suarez’s life more difficult, the Reds talisman also feels that his club have let him down in showing a lack of support following his eight match suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic during an Anfield clash in April. The striker has openly admitted his preferred move would be to Real Madrid, who have reportedly been interested in his services for some time, however, if it is simply a new home that will show him more affection that Suarez is looking for, should some of the Premier League’s elite clubs consider making a bid for the want-away forward?

There is no denying Suarez’s abilities. The Liverpool forward showed talismanic powers during the first half of the season, being the Reds’ first port of call in building attacks, not to mention being the only player on the roster at Anfield who could provide a steady supply of goals. The Uruguayan international finished the season, all be it a few games short due to his ban, with 23 goals and 5 assists in 33 appearances, yet his rate of providing goals would have undoubtedly been much higher had he the benefit of Daniel Sturrridge as a strike partner for more than a handful of games.

There’s also some truth behind the claim that Suarez would have picked up the PFA Player of the Year award had he not such a negative stigmatism in the eyes of the footballing public. Whilst Bale’s come of age year has been truly incredible to witness at times, and Robin Van Persie has maintained his ruthless efficiency following his £20million transfer to Manchester United, Suarez has been on par in terms of performances and end product with both this season, but arguably deserves further praise for doing it at a club that struggled to get out of the bottom half of the Premier League table before the end of the year. Brendan Rodgers’ inaugural season at Anfield would have been much tougher had his only world-class talent not been firing on all cylinders, and it’s obvious why Suarez’ transfer situation has brought interest from the Bernabeu.

Yet, just as his capabilities as a football are well known, so are his shortcomings as a professional. Although time and the reasoning of cultural ignorance has allowed us to put Suarez’ racial slur at Patrice Evra behind us, it is hardly the first or last showing where the striker’s desperate competitiveness has pushed him towards erratic behaviour. The bite on Ivanovic was the second incident of that kind during his career, the first coming in the Eredivisie and earning him the nickname ‘the cannibal’ in Holland, whilst over the course of the current season, television coverage has caught Suarez partaking in x-rated shin rakes and dirty tackles on more than one occasion – his ten yellow cards tell its own story, yet the tally could easily have been higher and included red cards.

But as previously stated, Suarez’s quality is simply undeniable. At his best he is unplayable, and when the balance between competitive aggression and composure is reached, there are arguably none better at fulfilling the Reds man’s role as a hard-working front man that encompasses the passing and dribbling ability of an attacking midfielder, in addition to the poacher’s instinct of a natural striker.

If a Premier League club is to convince Suarez to stay on English shores however, they will have to waggle an incredibly delicious carrot in front of him, whilst also being incredibly refrained in their use of the stick. Considering his ability, it seems that he would only be available to the Premiership’s top three, all of whom have an assured future in Europe barring a few hiccups and also have relatively equal standing in the title race next season. The promise of accolades and trophies could be enough for Suarez to reconsider a move to La Liga, yet, as ever in the modern age of football, it will also take a rather sizable pay-cheque to convince him to put up with the constant heckling of the British media for the foreseeable future.

That being said, would Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea be willing to actually pursue the intensely disliked Suarez? All three have the financial power at their disposal to do so, and all three need bolstering up front this summer, however it still seems an unrealistic possibility.

It’s unlikely he’d receive a warm welcome at Old Trafford, especially whilst Patrice Evra is still there, but even if the Frenchman took a widely rumoured pay-out and moved to Monaco over the summer, his history with Liverpool will undoubtedly make him a boo-boy amongst the fans. Similarly, although Jose Mourinho enjoys the limelight of his own controversy, only a matter of months has passed since Suarez tried to take a chunk out of the arm of a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.

It leaves the only viable option as Manchester City, yet I’m sure the SkyBlues would much rather put an era of babysitting their stars in case of temper tantrums behind them with the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini, after his predecessor Roberto Mancini had to put up with the egotistical, childish antics of Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez behind them.

That being said, Suarez and the Premier League is a combination that clearly works. Whereas Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski are untested in the English top flight, the Liverpool forward has a record of 38 goals in 77 domestic appearances. Similarly, his price tag, set at £40million due to his release clause, is relatively cheap considering the star quality that Suarez provides, in comparison to Bale, with estimates ranging from £50million to £80million, and Cavani, who would also cost somewhere in the region of £50million. It’s the kind of transfer that may not go down well with the supporters at first, but could lead to silverware and titles should Suarez’s antics be kept to a minimum.

My humble opinion is however that the Premier League’s love-hate relationship with Suarez has come to an end. It’s quite clear that he would much rather ply his trade abroad, citing how the  pressure from the media is venturing into his personal life, and I cannot foresee either David Moyes, Manuel Pellegrini or Jose Mourinho desperate to convince him otherwise. In some ways, the Liverpool striker has brought it upon himself, as his incidents have often verged upon being unforgivable, but it is a shame that the media have ostracised and pushed away one of the English top flight’s biggest talents, who will now undoubtedly move on to a higher calling.

Regarding the proposed move to Real Madrid however – has his agent actually informed him of the intensity in terms of volume and criticism of the Spanish media? Compared to their La Liga counter-parts, the British press is an ignorant, loudmouthed lout, rather than an intrusive and overwhelming monster.

Wolves give Cundle new deal

Tim Spiers has now given his reaction to the news that Wolves have given Luke Cundle a new deal.

The Lowdown: Cundle deal confirmed

The Midlands club confirmed earlier this week that they have given Cundle a new four-year contract at Molineux, putting a lot of faith in the 19-year-old.

The central midfield player has made four senior appearances in total so far this season, including his first Premier League start in the 2-0 win away at Tottenham Hotspur last month, and so has now been rewarded for his efforts.

The Latest: Spiers reacts

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Spiers has now given his reaction to the news of Cundle’s contract, adding that they have been looking to renew it ‘for a while’:

“Good to see Luke Cundle get a four-year deal having broken into the squad.

“Club have been looking to get that done for a while.”

The Verdict: Pathway there

As Spiers has claimed, the progress that Cundle has made shows that there is not just a pathway for him into the first team but other youngsters as well.

Of course, with Joao Moutinho now 35 years of age and Morgan Gibbs-White being sent out on loan to Sheffield United, playing in the middle of the park provides an opportunity for Cundle, which he has taken so far having been rewarded with the contract.

The Englishman has actually averaged the best pass success rate and most through balls per game out of any of his teammates in the top flight this term, albeit only playing 85 minutes in the division (WhoScored), and Bruno Lage will no doubt be happy with the decision to give him a new deal.

Wolves fans can watch youth semi for free

Liam Keen has given his reaction to some news that has now emerged involving Wolves’ upcoming FA Youth Cup semi-final tie against Manchester United.

The Lowdown: Semi-final booked

The Midlands club advanced to the semi-final of the Cup thanks to a 3-1 win at home to Brighton and Hove Albion, in what will be the first time that the youngsters have reached this stage since 2005.

Fans will now be able to watch the game for free, while there will also be subsidised coach travel, with the £3 paid donated to the Feed Our Pack project (The Express & Star).

The Latest: Keen reacts

Taking to Twitter, journalist Keen has now given his reaction to the news, claiming that it is an ‘excellent’ idea from the Molineux faithful:

“An excellent idea to get as many fans down as possible to Old Trafford next Wednesday.

“A big day for an exciting group of young players.”

The Verdict: Thinking about the fans

This initiative from the Wanderers shows that they are clearly thinking about the supporters, which they should be appreciative of.

It gives them a chance to see who exactly is excelling from the Academy, and who has a chance of being promoted to the first team under Bruno Lage – perhaps one or two of those participating in Manchester will follow the path set by Luke Cundle in recent months.

Nonetheless, it presents a chance to get to the final of the competition and boast some silverware for the club, and so the team will need all of the support that they can get on the day in order to help them push through.

Joe Gomez linked with shock Everton move

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez this summer, along with a number of other Premier League clubs.

The Lowdown: Gomez struggles for minutes at Anfield

There was a time when the 24-year-old was Virgil van Dijk’s first-choice centre-back partner, but that has become a thing of the past this season.

Gomez has been limited to just one Premier League start for the Reds in the current campaign after a long injury layoff, with Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate invariably preferred to him.

It could be that the defender sees his future elsewhere in order to earn regular playing time, and a new update certainly suggests as much.

The Latest: Everton keen on move for Gomez

Writing for Anfield Watch, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Everton are one of the clubs eyeing up a move for Gomez, in a transfer which would send shockwaves across Merseyside.

Tottenham, Newcastle, West Ham and Fulham are also mentioned as potential suitors, with the Liverpool defender worried that he will miss out on England’s 2022 World Cup squad if he stays put.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-23/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Surely he wouldn’t?

While it is becoming increasingly understandable why Gomez wants to leave Liverpool, it would be a huge surprise if he traded the Reds for neighbours and rivals Everton.

Abel Xavier was the last player to do the deed back in 2002, going the other way across Stanley Park, and it would be a decision which would likely hamper the 24-year-old’s legacy in red, so it is hard to see it happening.

The hope is that he remains at Liverpool, having been lauded as ‘sensational’ by Jurgen Klopp, with time still very much on his side and his pedigree undeniable (135 Reds appearances and five trophies). It would be hard to begrudge him a move if that’s what he wants, though.

Newcastle news on Longstaff contract

Kevin Campbell has given his reaction to the news that Newcastle United are now in talks with Sean Longstaff over a new deal.

The Lowdown: Contract talks

As per The Times, the North East club are in talks with Longstaff over a new contract at St. James’ Park, given that his current one on Tyneside expires in the summer.

Eddie Howe and senior figures at the Magpies are ‘eager’ for him to stay for the longer term, at a club that he has been at since he was nine years old.

The local lad has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, including 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge in the controversial defeat last weekend.

The Latest: Campbell reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell, who is a pundit for Sky Sports, has since given his reaction to the update, claiming that keeping Longstaff in the squad will be ‘massive’, believing the new deal may have even come as a ‘shock’ to him:

“I think home-grown players are going to be so important for a club like Newcastle.

“To have that player in the squad, and that real connection to the fans with one of their own will be massive.

“He was probably expecting to leave the club at the end of the season – so this may well have come as a bit of a shock to him.

“Eddie Howe has probably had a look at him and decided he could be a useful player to keep around.

“If the vision at Newcastle is as grand as we expect, they’re going to be playing a lot of games. Everyone will get their opportunities.”

The Verdict: Keep

With the new riches at the club’s disposal, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are likely to dip into the foreign market once more in the summer in order to attract some of the best players abroad to the Premier League, like they did with Bruno Guimaraes in the summer transfer window.

Thus, home-grown players like Longstaff will be important for the culture at the Toon, and also strengthen the connection with the supporters.

Nonetheless, he is having a fine season so far, ranking highly among his teammates in terms of average tackles and pass completion per game in the top flight, while he has also chipped in with a goal and an assist (WhoScored).

Longstaff gives Howe a solid option in the middle of the park, and so there is no reason to let him go this summer.

Aston Villa must sign Stefan De Vrij

Aston Villa have been linked with Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij, and it’s a move that Steven Gerrard simply has to make.

This article is part of The Transfer Tavern’s The Gossip series, where we analyse players and managers based on praise and criticism from past and present.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Football Insider reported on Saturday afternoon that Villa are monitoring the Dutchman as they look to sign an ‘A-list centre-back’ in the summer transfer window. De Vrij is into the final 18 months of his contract at the San Siro and Transfermarkt value him at £31.5m.

The same publication has previously reported that Gerrard had deemed Ezri Konsa too inconsistent and resolved to upgrade on him in the summer.

The manager

When he was in charge of the Dutchman at Inter Milan, Antonio Conte showered De Vrij with praise.

He talked up the defender’s reliability and importance and even compared him to Leonardo Bonucci, who was named in the FIFPro World XI in 2017 and, more impressively still, in the IFFHS Men’s Team of the Decade for the 2010s.

Placing De Vrij in that bracket is clearly a huge compliment.

The pundit

During last summer’s European Championship, Dutch pundit Kees Kwakman waxed lyrical about the defender.

He claimed that the Inter colossus ‘can do anything’ that’s asked of him as a defender and argued that he was more dependable than team-mate Matthijs de Ligt, the second most expensive defender in football history.

Kwakman said that the 30-year-old may not look ‘that strong’ or ‘that fast’ to the naked eye, but appearances can be deceptive.

The journalist

BBC Sport journalist Raj Chohan tweeted last summer that De Vrij had been ‘the best CB in Serie A overall’ in 2019/20 and 2020/21.

He then went a step further, declaring that the former Lazio man deserved to be recognised as ‘one of the best CBs in the world’.

Based on these compliments, if the Dutch centre-back were to join Aston Villa, he’d be arriving at Bodymoor Heath with some pretty glowing endorsements from respected figures in management and media.

West Ham: C&H drop big Calvert-Lewin claim

As per West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh, there has been a promising update on the club’s links to Everton star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye bid?

Near the end of January, West Ham and manager David Moyes became linked with an audacious move for the Toffees forward.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A report from The Sun’s Alan Nixon claimed West Ham are interested in the 25-year-old and Moyes ‘would really push the boat out’ in a ‘major bid’ to bring him to the London Stadium.

Nixon, recently publishing a follow-up to the story, says the Irons have maintained their interest past the winter window – coming as the Goodison Park club make a decision to ‘cash in’ on Calvert-Lewin this year.

Now, sharing an update, C&H have dropped a promising claim.

The Latest: C&H make promising Calvert-Lewin claim…

The Irons insider, sharing a message from one of their Everton sources, back that Moyes and co are keeping close tabs on the England striker – coming as his price drops from £80 million around a year ago to £60 million now.

A Merseyside informant with knowledge of the situation allegedly explained to C&H:

“West Ham know all about Dominic and they also know Everton are having to be more realistic about his valuation.

“They have scouted him extensively and there is a feeling a deal is there to be done. He’s at a good age and David Moyes is a fan.”

The Verdict: Make a move?

While Calvert-Lewin’s form has dipped somewhat this season, which could be put down to fitness issues, there is little arguing that he could fit the bill for West Ham going by his homegrown status and quality in recent seasons.

He bagged an impressive 16 goals in 32 Premier League starts under former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti last season, all whilst attempting more shots per 90 (2.5) than any player in their squad (WhoScored).

Calvert-Lewin also ranked in as Everton’s second-highest performer of 2020/2021 in terms of average match rating (7.17), solid numbers and a real indication as to why West Ham are keen.

As Everton drop his price tag, we believe the Hammers should certainly weigh a move this summer.

How Nottingham Forest nearly signed Bale

There is a phenomenal feeling about Nottingham Forest at the moment.

Steve Cooper has worked his magic at the City Ground and they now sit right on the cusp of a play-off place in the Championship.

What’s sparked that is a wonderful run of form throughout 2021, with Forest losing just a single game in the league this calendar year as they time their run towards a potential place at Wembley just perfectly.

To see such a historic outfit back in the top-flight would be quite the sight and it would be interesting to see whether they’d be able to keep the likes of Joe Worrall, Brennan Johnson or Djed Spence in their ranks as a result.

The trio have been outstanding this season and Spence, in particular, has finally filled the vacant area left behind by Matty Cash following his move to Aston Villa.

Yet, speaking of full-backs, it is apparent that Forest nearly had one of the brightest talents of a generation in their ranks all the way back in 2009.

That just so happens to be Gareth Bale, an individual who transitioned from a flying wing-back into a devastating and dynamic offensive weapon.

Over ten years ago now, Bale was struggling to get in the side at Tottenham and was the subject of a £2m bid from Nottingham Forest for his services.

A move came pretty close too but it unfortunately eventually fell away. Recalling negotiations in 2013, Clive Allen commented: “It did go pretty close.

“I know there were discussions between the clubs. The clubs had agreed the potential of the move, so it was something that he had to think about.”

Sadly for the Garibaldi, a move never materialised and they were left to wonder what if.

Bale eventually broke into the Tottenham team and was a revelation, scoring 72 goals and registering 61 assists for the Lilywhites.

He would then travel to Real Madrid in a then world-record move worth £85m and since that moment, his career has been nothing short of remarkable.

The Wales international has won the Champions League four times, has picked up two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and four Club World Cups too. Furthermore, the 32-year-old has found the back of the net on 106 occasions, scoring some quite magical goals in the process too.

Who could forget the moment he took Marc Bartra to the cleaners or his absurd overhead kick goal that beat Loris Karius in the Champions League final.

He has also represented his country at two major tournaments and is on the verge of securing a third following a stunning free-kick against Austria last week. It was trademark Bale who stepped up, sent the ball fizzing over the wall and then into the top corner.

The veteran has done that on countless occasions for club and country, but the Forest fans never got to see him turn out for them.

It’s enough to provoke a sense of regret with the Madrid star being hailed as “legendary” and as a “messiah” to Wales by writer Megan Feringa.

Those two words aptly describe him and although it’s unlikely Forest would have been able to keep hold of him anyway, it was a mistake not to do more in order to bring him in.

Billionaire drops out of Sheffield Wednesday takeover as new investor steps in at last second

Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover saga has taken a fresh twist following the news that a billionaire candidate has dropped out of the race to buy the club.

Wigfield insists "progress is being made" in takeover talks

It’s been almost two months since Sheffield Wednesday have entered administration and they’re yet to welcome new owners. A number of names have been linked with buying the club, but the administrators are seemingly intent on taking their time to ensure that there is no chance of a Dejphon Chansiri repeat.

Co-administrator Kris Wigfield has insisted that “progress is being made” behind-the-scenes even if fans are forced to wait for positive news to emerge.

Reports, meanwhile, have continued to arrive regarding the potential new owners. Earlier this week, the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan claimed that the takeover has now been narrowed down to a “two-horse race” between Mike Ashley and John McEvoy.

Since then, however, there’s been another twist. According to The Star’s Joe Crann on Saturday morning, McEvoy has now dropped out of the race to buy Sheffield Wednesday, but the Storch group have found a new partner at the last second to take their bid forward.

McEvoy drops out of Sheffield Wednesday takeover race

The American billionaire has decided against playing his part in the potential takeover, but that is not set to stand in the way of Storch’s attempts to buy the club. Just who their new partner is remains to be seen, however.

Sheffield Wednesday set to make "critical decision" as takeover bid launched

The Owls are yet to name their new owners.

ByTom Cunningham

Following the news, reports have also claimed that Ashley is now the frontrunner to complete a takeover and make his first return to English football since selling Newcastle United to PIF in 2021.

McEvoy’s decision has opened the race up once again and that could yet result in another point deduction for the Owls. As reported by Crann, some buyers would be willing to come back in and take a 15-point hit to invest more money into the current squad.

Given that Championship relegation is all but confirmed for Sheffield Wednesday, that could prove to be a wise decision in the long-term. Whether it is the Storch group and their new partner who completes a takeover remains to be seen, however.

Tottenham join chase for Rovers ace

Not content with trying to hijack Arsenal’s proposed move for Spanish starlet Juan Mata, Tottenham are now attempting to muscle in on another Gunners target, Christopher Samba.

Arsenal were said to be keen admirers of the giant defender, with the feeling seemingly reciprocated by the player, who was reported to have issued several ‘come and get me’ pleas to the Gunners – something Samba now strongly denies: ‘The declarations about me are totally false – never said that. I’m a Rovers player and will never mention other clubs – it’s disrespectful. Not happy right now’, he posted on his Twitter account.

Blackburn want £12 million at the very least for Samba, which is said to have put off Arsene Wenger who believes the player is overpriced. Which has left Tottenham to jump into pole-position, as The Daily Mail reports his agent will open talks with the club this week. In a proposed deal Spurs may offer cash, plus defender Sebastien Bassong – something which Blackburn may consider, having already lost another of their starting centre-backs, Phil Jones, earlier this summer.
